Discovering The Great American West From New Zealand

Picture yourself standing under an endless sky, watching bison graze in the distance, with steam from a geyser rising behind them. That is The Great American West, and for Kiwi travellers, it feels both epic and surprisingly familiar.

The Great American West refers to a specific region of the USA: Wyoming, Idaho, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Keeping the focus on these four states allows us to design trips that feel connected, logical, and achievable within a New Zealand holiday timeframe.

Why do these states work so well for New Zealanders? Big skies, quiet roads, and landscapes that still feel genuinely wild. There are national parks with wildlife you usually only see on TV, small towns that feel like movie sets, and strong threads of cowboy culture and Native American heritage. It feels like a world away from home, yet the love of the outdoors, road trips, and down-to-earth people will feel very familiar to Kiwis.

At Travel USA, we are New Zealand-based, so we understand long-haul flights, jet lag, and the way Kiwis like to travel. We help turn a once-in-a-lifetime idea into a practical plan, with tailored USA travel packages designed for real people, not travel brochures.

Wyoming Wonders: Cowboys, Geysers, and Wide-Open Skies

Wyoming is where many travellers first feel the true scale of the Great American West. Yellowstone National Park is the headline act, with erupting geysers, rainbow-coloured hot springs, and broad valleys where elk, bison, and sometimes bears roam freely. It feels raw, powerful, and unforgettable.

Just to the south sits Grand Teton National Park, all jagged peaks, glassy lakes, and classic hiking trails. The Tetons are one of those places where you can simply pull over, step out of the car, and feel like you are inside a postcard. For photographers, sunrise and sunset quickly become non-negotiable.

Then there is Jackson Hole, one of America’s most iconic Western towns. Wooden boardwalks, art galleries, live music bars, and nearby ranches all contribute to its Old West character. In summer, evenings might include a local rodeo; in winter, the mountains transform into a ski playground. It is also a favourite retreat for celebrities looking to escape the spotlight.

Wyoming nights often deliver some of the darkest skies you will ever experience. Stargazing can be as simple as stepping outside and looking up, with the Milky Way often clearly visible.

For Kiwi travellers, timing matters. Late spring through early autumn usually offers the best mix of open roads, active wildlife, and accessible trails. Driving here is straightforward, but distances can surprise people, especially if too much is planned in a single day. That is why, when we design our road-trips, we balance big driving days with time to linger, so the trip never feels rushed.

Idaho Adventures: Lakes, Hot Springs, and Hidden Gems

Idaho is the quiet achiever of The Great American West. Coeur d’Alene in the north wraps around a beautiful lake framed by forested hills. It is perfect for relaxed waterfront walks, gentle cycling, and scenic lake cruises – not to mention it’s home to a world class golf resort.

Further south, Sun Valley has an alpine atmosphere that many New Zealanders instantly connect with. In warmer months, it offers hiking, mountain biking, and crystal-clear streams. In cooler seasons, it becomes a classic ski town with a relaxed, welcoming feel.

Continuing through the state, one of Idaho’s standout natural sights is Shoshone Falls, often referred to as the “Niagara of the West”. Located near Twin Falls on the Snake River, the falls are taller than Niagara and can be viewed from several scenic platforms and walking trails.

Idaho is also famous for its hot springs. All across the state, warm, mineral-rich waters bubble up beside rivers or in tucked-away valleys. Soaking in a hot spring while pine trees line the horizon often becomes a trip highlight. Lava Hot Springs is a great example, set in a mountain valley along the Portneuf River and offering a range of outdoor soaking pools.

Idaho suits travellers who prefer quieter routes and authentic small towns. If you like stopping at local diners, chatting with shop owners, and finding viewpoints without crowds, this state belongs on your list.

Useful road connections link Idaho to Wyoming and South Dakota, and our role is to shape those links into a smooth, enjoyable flow. When we design USA tour packages that include Idaho, we pay close attention to where you stay, how long you stay, and how much you realistically want to do each day.

Many New Zealanders prefer a loose structure, with accommodation pre-booked but plenty of free time. For that travel style, it helps to think about:

• How many one-night stops you actually enjoy

• Whether you prefer scenic drives or more time on foot

• How often you want planned activities versus free exploration

• Whether you enjoy small-town motels, lodges, or cabins

South Dakota Stories: Monuments, Badlands, and Frontier Towns

South Dakota delivers some of the most recognisable images in American travel. Mount Rushmore never fails to deliver a genuine ‘wow’ moment when you first see the presidential faces carved into the granite. Exploring on foot via the surrounding trails and viewing platforms allows you to appreciate the scale, take in different perspectives, and really feel the achievement of the sculptors.

Nearby, the Crazy Horse Memorial offers an important cultural and historical counterpoint. Honouring the Lakota leader, the monument is still very much a work in progress, but guided visits allow you to get close to the massive carving and gain unique views of the face while learning about Indigenous history, traditions, and storytelling.

Badlands National Park feels almost otherworldly, with jagged rock formations, layered colours, and winding roads. Even short walks lead to viewpoints that make you feel wonderfully small in a vast landscape.

The rest of the Black Hills region is full of forested ridges, small lakes, and scenic drives. Deadwood, with its Wild West history, preserved buildings, and old-style saloons, offers a vivid sense of frontier life. Across the state, Native American culture is present in museums, memorials, and interpretive centres, encouraging a more thoughtful style of travel.

Within a broader Great American West road trip, South Dakota often sits comfortably in the middle or toward the end of the journey. By this point, many Kiwi travellers feel fully adjusted to the time difference, and the holiday rhythm has settled in.

Good pacing helps keep the experience relaxed:

• Arriving in a town by mid-afternoon, not late at night

• Having one or two pre-booked activities, then free time

• Mixing scenic drives with short walks or easy hikes

• Allowing an occasional full rest day with no driving at all

North Dakota Frontiers: Wide Horizons and Untold Histories

North Dakota feels quieter, which for many New Zealanders is exactly the appeal. Theodore Roosevelt National Park combines rugged badlands scenery with a good chance of spotting wildlife. Hosting the largest buffalo statue in the world, it is easy to spend a day simply stopping at viewpoints, walking short trails, and watching how the light changes across the cliffs.

Beyond the park, you will find small towns, local diners, and a sense of space that invites slower travel. Heritage sites, pioneer stories, and Native American landmarks appear in museums, visitor centres, and along backroads. It is a more reflective side of the USA, where you can take your time and let the stories sink in.

A few key sites to include in your plan include Fort Union Trading Post Historic Site, located between the Montana and South Dakota borders, which was a key trading hub in the 1800s. Also, Fort Abraham Lincoln, an historic military post established in 1851 and associated with General George Custer during the Battle of Little Bighorn. Looking ahead, the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, scheduled to open on 4th July 2026, will offer an immersive and modern way to explore the life, legacy, and enduring influence of the 26th President.

North Dakota pairs well with South Dakota or Wyoming, especially if you enjoy watching the country gradually change as you move. Spring and autumn can be particularly pleasant, with milder temperatures and fewer visitors, which suits Kiwis who prefer to avoid peak summer crowds.

When we include North Dakota in custom USA tour packages, we pay special attention to flight paths, internal connections, and how the overall loop feels. The aim is to keep the trip interesting and varied, without it becoming a logistical nightmare for you to solve.

Crafting Your Great American West Itinerary with Travel USA

No two New Zealand travellers approach this region in the same way, which is why flexibility matters. Some want a self-drive road trip with scenic backroads and characterful towns. Others prefer a small-group experience for part of the journey, letting someone else handle the driving.

Families may need shorter driving days and more frequent breaks. Couples often favour cabins, quieter trails, and photography stops. Special-interest travellers might focus on hiking, wildlife, or history, shaping each day around a specific theme.

Planning from New Zealand also means thinking through long flights and time zones. It helps to consider:

• Which gateway city works best

• How many internal flights are you comfortable with

• Whether you prefer summer warmth or shoulder-season calm

• How much total time do you want away from home

At Travel USA, we bring these elements together into tailored USA travel packages and road trips that are realistic, balanced, and enjoyable. Our deep knowledge of the USA, and in particular of lesser-known gems such as Wyoming, Idaho, South Dakota, and North Dakota, allows us to craft a seamless and unforgettable Great American West experience for you.

The Great American West offers something many New Zealanders are quietly craving: authentic landscapes, honest small towns, cultural depth, and roads that invite unhurried exploration.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We’ve been back a week and had time to reflect on what was a fantastic trip to Colorado and Chicago. Thanks for all your assistance with our trip – it was the best US trip we have had so far

Amazing Travel USA – Andrew’s attunement to us resulted in great options. We were provided with responsive communication and efficiency that enhanced our USA plans, so adventure was fun and easy. Highly recommended.

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)

You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
