Utah’s Mighty Five Guide for Kiwi Hikers and Road Trippers

Published on : April 2, 2026

Discover Utah’s Mighty Five Adventure Playground

Utah’s Mighty Five national parks are one of the great road trips for Kiwi hikers and outdoor lovers, with dramatic red rock, huge skies, and trails that feel totally different from anything back home. If you love a good walk in the Southern Alps, coastal views, or native bush tracks, these desert canyons and arches will feel both foreign and strangely familiar, with the same sense of freedom and big horizons. In one compact region you can hike river-filled gorges, stroll along canyon rims, and watch stars blaze across some of the darkest skies in the United States.

The Mighty Five are Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands. Each park has its own character: lush river canyons, hoodoo-filled amphitheaters, quiet fruit orchards framed by red cliffs, sculpted stone arches, and deep canyon country that seems to go on forever. As a New Zealand-owned specialist, we design U.S. national park tours and self-drive holidays that match how Kiwis actually like to travel, whether that is a rental car and motels, an RV-style road trip, or a mix of independent days and guided experiences. Linked with flights into Las Vegas or Salt Lake City, visiting all five parks creates a classic American Southwest adventure that works perfectly for a first or second USA holiday.

Zion National Park Canyons, Cliffs, and Iconic Hikes

Zion feels like walking into a sandstone cathedral, with sheer orange cliffs rising above a green valley floor and the Virgin River curling along the bottom. For New Zealanders used to alpine lakes and beech forest, Zion’s narrow slot canyons, dry desert colours, and seasonal rivers feel wonderfully different. It is a great place to stretch your legs straight after a long flight and reset your body clock with fresh air and big views.

Signature experiences in Zion include hiking the Narrows, where you literally walk in the river between towering canyon walls, and the legendary Angels Landing, a steep, exposed ridge hike that now requires a permit and a sensible respect for heights and fitness. For something gentler, the Emerald Pools tracks, riverside walks, and viewpoints along the shuttle-only Scenic Drive give you canyon scenery without needing to be a hardcore tramper.

For Kiwi travellers, timing matters. Spring and autumn bring pleasant temperatures and good daylight, while mid-summer can be very hot and crowded. The park uses a shuttle system along its main canyon, and parking inside the park is limited, so many visitors stay just outside the gates in Springdale and walk or shuttle in. For first timers, especially those landing in Las Vegas, we often suggest spending two or three nights here at the start or end of a Mighty Five loop to recover from jet lag, tick off a few iconic hikes, and get used to desert conditions.

Bryce Canyon’s Hoodoo Wonderland and Stargazing Nights

Bryce Canyon looks like nowhere else, with amphitheaters filled with red and orange hoodoos that catch the light differently every hour of the day. The park sits at a higher elevation than Zion, so it generally feels cooler, and that fresh, thin air gives its viewpoints a wide, open feel that photographers love. Sunrise and sunset along the rim are hard to beat, with colours shifting from soft pink to fiery orange.

Top experiences here are relatively accessible, which is ideal if you are mixing fitness levels in one group. The Rim Trail between viewpoints like Sunrise, Sunset, and Inspiration Points gives huge views without much effort. If you want to get among the hoodoos, the combination of Navajo Loop and Queen’s Garden is a classic half-day hike, steep in places but not long, with plenty of spots to stop and catch your breath. In colder months, a dusting of snow on the hoodoos turns the whole scene into something of a wonderland, completely different.

Because of the altitude, some Kiwis notice they puff more than usual on climbs, so it pays to take it easy on the first day and drink plenty of water. Roads can be icy in winter, and some viewpoints or tracks may close temporarily, but the payoff is far smaller crowds. Bryce is also known for incredibly dark skies, which is perfect if you enjoy night photography or simply lying back and watching the Milky Way. On a road trip, Bryce slots naturally between Zion and Capitol Reef, and we often shape U.S. national park tours around it for both casual walkers and keen hikers.

Capitol Reef Quiet Gem of Orchards and Red Rock

Capitol Reef is the quiet achiever among Utah’s parks. It has a relaxed, rural feeling, centred on the green Fruita Historic District with its old orchards and rustic buildings surrounded by rugged red cliffs. The park follows a giant wrinkle in the Earth’s crust called the Waterpocket Fold, which creates dramatic layered rock formations without crowds.

Highlights here tend to be simple and satisfying. You can stroll through Fruita, visit the small visitor centre, and in season pick or buy fruit from the orchards. The main scenic drive offers viewpoints and short walks, with popular options like Hickman Bridge, a natural rock span, or the Grand Wash, a broad canyon that feels wild but is easy walking for most people. Many visitors also stop at the historic Gifford House for a slice of pie, a small reward between longer days on the road.

Kiwi travellers often tell us they appreciate the slower pace here. After the busier feel of Zion and Bryce, Capitol Reef gives you space to breathe and break up the driving with short, family-friendly strolls. Routing-wise, it is the natural link between Bryce Canyon and Moab, and we usually suggest at least one or two nights so you can enjoy the park without rushing, especially if you are covering long distances between Utah’s east and west sides.

Arches and Canyonlands Moab’s Twin Adventure Hubs

Moab is the energetic hub town that serves both Arches and Canyonlands, with cafes, outdoor shops, and a lively, outdoorsy buzz. Arches is compact but packed with sculpted stone arches and fins, while Canyonlands stretches out across deep canyons and mesas that feel very remote. Together they give you two completely different takes on desert hiking within easy driving distance of one base.

In Arches, highlights include Delicate Arch, which is a moderate hike to one of the most photographed rock formations in the USA, the Windows Section for shorter walks among big arches, and Landscape Arch along the Devil’s Garden track. Early morning and late afternoon are prime times to visit, both for cooler temperatures and for soft light on the rocks. The park sometimes uses timed entry systems, so it pays to plan ahead rather than just turning up in the middle of the day.

Canyonlands is split into different districts, with Island in the Sky the easiest for most Kiwi visitors to reach from Moab. Classic stops like Mesa Arch at sunrise and Grand View Point offer huge canyon vistas without long hikes, while optional 4WD or guided trips can take you down into rougher terrain if you want something more adventurous. Beyond hiking, Moab itself is a launch pad for activities such as mountain biking, rafting on the Colorado River, and scenic drives that link into longer U.S. national park tours across Utah, Colorado, and neighbouring states.

Planning a Mighty Five Road Trip From New Zealand

When we plan Mighty Five holidays for Kiwi travellers, we usually start with where you land. A popular loop if travelling from Las Vegas is to ravel to Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, and Moab for Arches and Canyonlands, then return via other Utah or Arizona highlights. From Salt Lake City, it makes sense to visit Moab first, then Capitol Reef, Bryce, and Zion, finishing closer to Nevada or looping back to Utah. As you’ll be entering multiple national parks along the way, Kiwi travellers will also benefit from using the America the Beautiful Pass, which for a one-time cost covers entry fees across the entire route.

To keep the trip enjoyable rather than a blur of driving, it helps to allow at least a couple of nights in key stops like Zion and Moab, with shorter single-night stays where it makes sense. Typical driving times between parks can range from a few hours to most of the day, so we pay close attention to spacing out longer legs and making sure you are not arriving late and leaving early at every stop. You can travel in a standard car with hotels or motels, hire an RV for a camper-van style experience, or mix self-driving with a few guided days to simplify logistics in busier parks.

Some practical tips Kiwis find useful include:

  • Travel in shoulder seasons for more comfortable hiking temperatures
  • Check which hikes or activities require permits or reservations before you go
  • Pre-purchase a non-residents America the Beautiful Pass
  • Be realistic about how much you can fit in each day with jet lag and kids
  • Keep a buffer day or two in the itinerary for weather or rest

As a New Zealand-owned specialist focused on USA holidays, we design personalised U.S. national park tours that bundle flights, car rental, carefully chosen accommodation, and handpicked experiences into a trip that fits your pace and interests. Whether you are a couple chasing iconic hikes, a family balancing playground stops with canyon walks, or serious trampers keen on longer desert tracks, we can help shape the Mighty Five into your style of adventure.

Turn Your Utah National Parks Dream Into a Plan

The best way to turn inspiration into a real trip is to think about how you like to travel. Do you want big hiking days with early starts, or relaxed mornings and shorter viewpoints? Are you happiest driving every day, or do you prefer several nights in one place to unpack and settle in? Once you are clear on your pace and must-see parks, it becomes much easier to map out a loop that actually feels like a holiday, not just a checklist.

Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands each bring their own personality to the mix, from cool river canyons to windswept mesas and quiet, orchard-filled valleys. Linking all five in one road trip gives you a sense of the sheer variety of the American Southwest, and for Kiwi hikers and outdoor enthusiasts it often ends up being one of those once-in-a-lifetime trips you talk about for years.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We’ve been back a week and had time to reflect on what was a fantastic trip to Colorado and Chicago. Thanks for all your assistance with our trip – it was the best US trip we have had so far

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)

You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
