Self-Drive USA Holidays: What Kiwi Travellers Should Expect
Published on : October 10, 2025
Driving across the USA feels like opening up the map and following whatever road looks most appealing. For Kiwi travellers, self drive holiday packages put you in charge, letting you set the pace and route without having to follow a set tour. Whether it’s a wide desert highway or a stretch of coastline, travelling by road in the USA is relaxing, flexible, and often full of small surprises.
Here, you’ll get a closer look at what to expect with a self-drive holiday through the States. The variety is huge-famous cities, tiny towns, and roads that wind through everything from red rock canyons to gold-leafed forests. You might be aiming for a classic like Route 66 or are simply stringing together favourite stops for the best road trip memories.
Starting with the Basics: What a Self-Drive USA Holiday Looks Like
A road trip in the USA is not just about the driving. It means you can stop for almost anything-a photo, a snack, a roadside market, or a lookout point. Major highways connect nearly all big cities, and quieter byways pull you away from busy schedules into scenic spots. Although you drive on the opposite side of the road, it doesn’t take long to get used to this.
Most self drive holiday packages include car hire, pre-booked hotels or motels, and a draft itinerary. Helpful extras like up-to-date printed maps or GPS are included, great for when your mobile loses reception. Roads in the USA are well signed, and traffic rules are easy to follow. Parking, check-ins, and fuel stops are all straightforward, and can feel quite familiar, especially in regional towns.
Kiwi travellers often choose self-drive for the flexibility. Skip waiting for tour buses, break for a coffee when you want, or set your own schedule. If you want to detour for a morning swim or join a local festival, you can. Each day is shaped by your choices, not a timetable.
Travel USA offers customised self drive holiday packages with flexible start and end dates, making it simple to shape each trip to your school holiday dates or work breaks.
Popular USA Routes and Regions for Road Trips
Some routes are a absolute must for road trippers. Route 66, stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles, brings up images of retro diners, quirky museums, and shifting scenery. Then there is California’s Pacific Coast Highway, a favourite for its ocean views, beaches, and coastal towns.
Other popular drives include the Southwest desert loop, cutting through Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. You’ll find national parks, canyon country, and far-off desert views. The Deep South offers routes that thread through musical cities like New Orleans, Memphis and Nashville with stops that highlight southern culture and hospitality.
Families often like itineraries that link big attractions and parks. Some of the best self drive holiday packages include routes between famous USA national parks, such as Yosemite or Grand Canyon, and kid-friendly destinations like Universal Studios or Walt Disney World Resort. Driving makes it easy to mix quiet nature stops with amusement parks or big city shopping.
Weather is part of the planning too. Inbetween seasons are ideal for places like California, Texas, or central Florida. These regions still offer warm days and mostly clear skies, without the sticky heat of high summer or the crowds of peak holidays. At these times of the year, you can look forward to outdoor dining, walks in the sun, and colourful leaves in many places.
What to Expect on the Road: Timing, Distances and Driving Culture
For many Kiwis, the switch to driving on the right takes getting used to at first. It becomes second nature after a little while. Indicator and wiper positions might be swapped. Speed limits can change between states or towns, but everything is signposted clearly.
Most drivers in the USA are courteous and stick to expected road behaviour. Small-town zones slow everything down, and police presence is common in these areas, keeping local traffic relaxed. Driving in large cities can feel hectic, but it is often less stressful than central Auckland during rush hour.
Fuel stations are regular across major highways, and many have large convenience stores or diners attached, handy for snacks or coffee on longer drives. Some long-distance drives between national parks or remote areas may require a little planning, but so long as you top up regularly, you’ll be all set.
Distances on the map fool a lot of first-timers. A drive that looks short can stretch a few hours with stops or scenic detours. That’s expected, and pausing for the odd photo or bakery break is usually worth it. Spacing out driving days is popular, and family groups especially appreciate slower stretches and extra nights in favourite places.
Packing In Experiences Along the Way
What makes a self-drive trip fun is mixing types of stops and activities. One morning you could be at a fresh food market in LA, the next you’re hiking in Zion National Park. There’s always something fresh just around the corner.
Here are some experience highlights often included in self drive holiday packages:
– National Park visits, such as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, or Yellowstone. Entry tickets and maps are sorted for you in advance.
– Popular attractions, like Walt Disney World Resort in Florida or Universal Studios in California, often come with multi-day passes as part of your itinerary.
– City breaks in legendary spots such as San Francisco, New Orleans, or Nashville, where you get the best of food, music, or shopping.
– Smaller regional stops for things like local farmers markets, small-art towns, or out-of-the-way diners. These can be added into most itineraries.
Multi-generational groups often aim for a blend, adding attractions or events everyone can enjoy—even if just for a day between nature stops.
Tailoring the Trip to Kiwi Travel Styles
Personalising the trip makes a massive difference for comfort and fun. Some like to power through with early starts and long days on the road. Others choose quieter routes, with later starts and evenings spent people-watching in town squares or relaxing in local cafés.
Families with kids often pick larger vehicles, like SUVs or Motor Homes, so there’s plenty of room for luggage and snacks. Couples sometimes want convertibles for scenic stretches such as California’s Big Sur or prefer a compact car for easy parking in cities. Booking through a specialist means your car type, route, and hotel style are matched to how you want to travel.
Driving holidays don’t need to be packed with back-to-back roadside stops to feel worthwhile. Many packages allow a rest day or two, plus plenty of time for unplanned detours or new finds.
Travel USA’s self drive holiday packages include pre-loaded navigation details, suggested local events based on the month of travel, and even optional guided experiences in cities or national parks.
The Open Road Awaits
Driving your own holiday across the USA is all about keeping the trip in your hands. Each day brings the choice to stop, linger, or keep rolling all at your own pace.
For many, the best memories come from these small freedoms. Maybe it’s an unexpected mountain view, a diner breakfast that beats expectations, or a friendly chat at a town festival. The right plan, matched with flexibility, makes every kilometre something to look forward to.
The open roads of the USA are there to help build a trip that’s as exciting or relaxed as you need, with the best parts often found in the moments between the planned stops. Whether it’s your first loop around California, a family road trip through Texas, following the old highways east or driving through one of the most scenic drives in the USA, the Blue Ridge Parkway in the North & South Carolinas, a self-drive holiday package sets you up for something special every time.
Ready to start planning your own adventure? We design custom trips that blend scenic highways, iconic landmarks and local favourites into something that feels genuinely yours. Whether it’s the curves of Route 66, the beauty of California’s coast or the quiet of the national parks, we know how to shape the plan around your pace. You’ll find plenty of ideas in our collection of self drive holiday packages made for Kiwi travellers who want more than the standard route. At Travel USA, we’re here to help you map it out, get in touch today and let’s bring your road trip to life.

We used Travel USA to plan a 3-week trip around the States – we had the trip of a lifetime and saw so much more than we thought we would with Andrew’s great recommendations. They are very knowledgeable across all aspects of travel (city passes, best travel routes) and were immediately on hand whenever we had any questions or concerns at any point, even when we were over there. We also loved that Andrew provided such a detailed itinerary for us, including extra information or handy tips. Whether it’s planning what to see while you’re in the States or the best way to make the most of your time in a specific city, we highly recommend Travel USA.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)
You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
