Puerto Rico: The Caribbean Road Trip You Didn’t Know You Needed
Published on : October 8, 2026
What if one of the most exciting destinations for your next USA holiday wasn’t on the mainland at all?
When New Zealanders think about travelling to the United States, certain destinations immediately come to mind. New York, California, Las Vegas, Hawaii, perhaps a great American road trip through the national parks of the West. But what about Puerto Rico?
If it hasn’t featured on your USA travel wish list before, you’re probably not alone. Despite being a U.S. territory, Puerto Rico remains relatively unexplored by Kiwi holidaymakers. And yet this Caribbean island offers something rather special: colourful Spanish heritage, spectacular beaches, tropical rainforest, dramatic mountain scenery and a vibrant culture that feels distinctly different from mainland America.
Better still, it’s a destination that lends itself beautifully to exploring by car. Think of it as a Caribbean escape with the freedom of a great American road trip. And perhaps one of the most interesting new destinations for Kiwi travellers to consider in 2027.
Wait a minute. Puerto Rico is part of the USA?
Yes, it is. And that’s part of what makes this destination so interesting. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory in the northeastern Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its residents are U.S. citizens; the currency is the U.S. dollar and flights from the U.S. mainland are treated as domestic services. But while Puerto Rico has strong connections to the United States, it has a distinctive identity of its own.
Spanish and English are official languages, although Spanish is the language you’ll hear most often. The island’s culture reflects centuries of Taíno, African and Spanish influences, expressed through its architecture, music, food, traditions and everyday life. That cultural difference is one of Puerto Rico’s greatest attractions.
You can spend the morning exploring a Spanish fortress, the afternoon enjoying a traditional Puerto Rican lunch and the evening listening to salsa music in a lively neighbourhood bar. And the following day, you might be driving through tropical rainforest or watching surfers tackle the Atlantic waves. It’s an appealing combination – somewhere that feels genuinely different while still fitting comfortably into a wider USA holiday.
Old San Juan: Where the Caribbean meets 500 years of history
There’s something wonderfully inviting about Old San Juan. Perhaps it’s the colourful colonial buildings, painted in shades of yellow, blue, pink and green. Or the narrow cobblestone streets, little cafés and lively plazas. Perhaps it’s the sight of enormous Spanish fortifications rising above the Atlantic Ocean. Whatever the reason, Old San Juan makes a memorable introduction to Puerto Rico.
The historic district occupies a peninsula at the entrance to San Juan Bay, and its compact streets are best explored on foot. Wander without too much of a plan and you’ll discover small shops, galleries, restaurants, churches and quiet courtyards tucked between centuries-old buildings. Two of the most impressive landmarks are Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, enormous fortifications constructed by the Spanish to defend this strategically important Caribbean port. Standing beside their thick stone walls, looking out towards the Atlantic, it’s easy to appreciate just how important Puerto Rico once was to Spain’s Caribbean empire.
But Old San Juan isn’t simply an open-air museum. It’s a living, colourful neighbourhood where food, music and everyday life are every bit as important as the history. And that makes it an excellent place to begin discovering what Puerto Rico is really about.
Come hungry. Puerto Rico has plenty to offer.
One of the upsides of travelling somewhere new is discovering its food, and Puerto Rico certainly doesn’t disappoint. Puerto Rican cooking is full of flavour, drawing on Spanish, African and Taíno traditions. Rice, beans, plantains, pork, seafood and aromatic seasonings feature prominently, often in dishes that have been passed down through generations.
One local favourite is mofongo, made from mashed fried green plantains, garlic and other ingredients, often served with pork, chicken or seafood. Then there’s lechón asado, slow-roasted pork with beautifully crisp skin, a dish closely associated with family gatherings and celebrations. You’ll also encounter empanadillas, tostones, fresh seafood and plenty of tempting roadside food stalls.
And, of course, there’s rum. Puerto Rico has a long history of rum production, and a visit to Casa BACARDÍ across the bay from Old San Juan offers an entertaining introduction. You can even join a hands-on mixology class and learn how to make your own Caribbean cocktails. Food is also a wonderful way to connect with the island’s people and culture. A guided walking food tour through Old San Juan can reveal stories and traditions you might otherwise miss.
Our advice? Arrive hungry, be curious and don’t be afraid to try something unfamiliar.
An island made for the open road
Here’s something that may surprise you. Puerto Rico isn’t just somewhere to fly into, find a beach resort and spend a week beside the pool. It’s an island with an extraordinary variety of landscapes, and one of the best ways to appreciate them is to hire a car and explore.
Travel west from San Juan and the scenery begins to change. Along the northern coastline are beautiful beaches, limestone formations and fascinating cave country around Arecibo. One particularly photogenic stop is Mar Chiquita, a sheltered natural pool framed by rocky limestone formations near Manatí. Continue towards the west coast and you’ll reach Rincon, a laid-back beach town famous for its surfing, beautiful sunsets and relaxed atmosphere. This is a very different Puerto Rico from the busy streets of San Juan. Spend time watching surfers at Domes Beach or María’s Beach, discover the coastline around Tres Palmas or simply find a waterfront restaurant and enjoy the sunset. It’s the sort of place where slowing down is part of the attraction.
Further south, Cabo Rojo delivers another dramatic change of scenery. Here, limestone cliffs rise above turquoise waters, salt flats create striking landscapes, and the historic Los Morrillos Lighthouse stands overlooking the Caribbean. Nearby La Playuela, often called Playa Sucia, is one of the island’s most picturesque beaches. And that’s the beauty of a Puerto Rican road trip. You don’t need to travel enormous distances to experience somewhere completely different!
Beyond the beaches: Discover Puerto Rico’s historic south
While San Juan receives much of the attention, Puerto Rico’s southern coast has stories of its own. The city of Ponce, often called the Pearl of the South, is a particularly rewarding stop for travellers interested in architecture, history and local culture. At the heart of the city is Plaza Las Delicias, a handsome central square surrounded by historic buildings. Its most recognisable landmark is Parque de Bombas, the striking red-and-black former fire station that has become one of Ponce’s best-known symbols.
Nearby stands the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, while the surrounding streets reveal colourful architecture and reminders of the city’s prosperous past. Overlooking Ponce is Castillo Serrallés, the former mansion of the family behind Puerto Rico’s Don Q rum. Its architecture, gardens and exhibits offer a fascinating glimpse into the island’s sugar and rum industries. Ponce also has an important artistic heritage, including the renowned Museo de Arte de Ponce, although visitors should check current opening arrangements.
What makes Ponce worthwhile isn’t simply the collection of attractions. It’s the opportunity to experience another side of Puerto Rico, away from the main tourist centres, where the pace of life and local character feel quite different. And if you enjoy scenic driving, the journey from the south coast through Puerto Rico’s mountainous interior is an experience in itself.
A tropical rainforest in the USA? Absolutely.
When you picture America’s great national forests, you might imagine the towering trees of California, the mountains of Colorado or the vast wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. You probably don’t picture a tropical rainforest in the Caribbean. But that’s exactly what you’ll find at El Yunque National Forest, in northeastern Puerto Rico.
El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, a lush mountain landscape of dense vegetation, waterfalls, walking trails and spectacular viewpoints. It’s a remarkable contrast to the island’s beaches and historic towns. Drive into the forest and the surroundings become increasingly green, with giant ferns, tropical trees and mist-covered mountains creating an atmosphere that feels worlds away from the coastline. There are opportunities to explore walking trails, discover waterfalls and stop at viewpoints such as Yokahú Observation Tower. You may even hear the distinctive call of the tiny coquí, a tree frog that has become one of Puerto Rico’s most beloved symbols.
Just a short drive from El Yunque is the laid-back coastal town of Luquillo, where beautiful beaches, colourful local food kiosks and a relaxed Caribbean atmosphere make it an ideal base for exploring northeastern Puerto Rico. Spend your days discovering the rainforest, enjoying the beach or heading out on a boat excursion to Culebra, then return to Luquillo for a casual evening enjoying local food and island life. Rainforest in the morning. Beach in the afternoon. Fresh local food in the evening. Not a bad way to spend a day in the Caribbean.
Culebra: The Caribbean beach you’ve been dreaming about
Of course, we can’t talk about Puerto Rico without mentioning its beaches. And while the main island has plenty of beautiful stretches of coastline, some of its most spectacular scenery lies just offshore.
Culebra, a small island east of Puerto Rico, is famous for its clear turquoise waters, white-sand beaches and excellent opportunities for snorkelling. Its best-known attraction is Flamenco Beach, a sweeping crescent of pale sand backed by green hills and washed by wonderfully clear Caribbean water. It’s the sort of beach that looks almost too good to be real.
But Culebra offers more than somewhere to spread out a beach towel. The surrounding waters are home to coral reefs and marine life, making the island particularly appealing for snorkelling and boat excursions. A full-day boat trip from Fajardo provides a wonderful way to experience this part of Puerto Rico, combining time on the water with snorkelling and the chance to enjoy some spectacular island scenery. For travellers who love the ocean, Culebra is likely to be one of the highlights of the holiday. And yet there’s another nearby island that offers something completely different.
Vieques: Wild horses and a bay that glows in the dark
Just when you think Puerto Rico has revealed all its surprises, along comes Vieques. Located off the eastern coast of the main island, Vieques has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beaches, protected natural landscapes and an unusual local attraction – wild-roaming horses. It’s not uncommon to encounter horses wandering near roads, beaches or around the island’s small communities. For visitors, it’s another reminder that Vieques moves to its own rhythm.
The island’s appeal lies partly in its simplicity. Spend your days discovering quiet beaches, enjoying the waterfront around Esperanza or simply slowing down and soaking up the Caribbean atmosphere. But the experience that really sets Vieques apart happens after dark!
Mosquito Bay is famous for its extraordinary bioluminescence. The water contains microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates, which produce flashes of light when disturbed. On a suitable evening, paddling a kayak through the bay can create an almost magical effect as the water sparkles around your paddle and the movement of the kayak. Mosquito Bay has been recognised as the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay, although the intensity of the display varies with natural conditions, including moonlight and weather. It’s one of those experiences that’s difficult to capture in a photograph and far better appreciated in person. And it’s a remarkable way to finish a Puerto Rican adventure.
So why aren’t more Kiwis visiting Puerto Rico?
That’s a good question. Perhaps it’s simply because Puerto Rico hasn’t traditionally featured prominently in the USA holiday options promoted to New Zealand travellers. We’re familiar with Hawaii, California, New York and Florida. We know about the national parks, Route 66 and the great American road trip. But the Caribbean side of the USA? Not so much. And that’s an opportunity.
Puerto Rico offers something that many experienced travellers are increasingly looking for: a destination that feels fresh and different without requiring them to abandon the style of travel they already enjoy. There’s plenty of history and culture, excellent food, beautiful beaches and memorable natural attractions. And importantly, there’s enough variety to make a longer holiday genuinely worthwhile. It’s not a destination where you need to spend every day doing the same thing. You can explore independently, stay in several different locations and combine active sightseeing with time to relax. For Kiwi couples who enjoy discovering destinations at their own pace, that combination has enormous appeal.
How easy is it to get to Puerto Rico from New Zealand?
Although there are no direct flights from New Zealand to Puerto Rico, the island is easily accessible through major U.S. gateways, including cities such as Houston, Miami and New York, depending on airline schedules and connections. That makes Puerto Rico an interesting destination in its own right or a possible addition to a longer USA holiday.
Puerto Rico uses U.S. dollars, and the same U.S. immigration requirements generally apply as for travel to the mainland United States. Eligible New Zealand passport holders can usually travel under the Visa Waiver Program with an approved ESTA, subject to the usual requirements. Once you’ve entered the United States, onward flights from the mainland to Puerto Rico are domestic services.
Driving is on the right, as elsewhere in the USA, and a rental car provides the freedom to explore beyond San Juan. Our preferred approach is to enjoy Old San Juan without a vehicle, then collect a rental car when it’s time to begin exploring the island. And while you could easily spend a week relaxing at a beach resort, we’d encourage you to allow longer if you really want to discover what makes Puerto Rico special.
One island. A world of discovery.
So, is Puerto Rico worth considering for your next USA holiday? We certainly think so. It’s not simply another Caribbean beach destination, although the beaches are spectacular. It’s a place where Spanish colonial history meets contemporary Caribbean culture. Where surf towns give way to historic cities, winding mountain roads and tropical rainforest. Where you can snorkel beautiful coral reefs by day and kayak through glowing waters after dark. And perhaps most appealing of all, it’s somewhere that still feels like a new discovery for many New Zealand travellers.
At Travel USA, we’ve created a 13-day Discover Puerto Rico itinerary designed to bring these different experiences together. The journey combines Old San Juan, Rincón, Ponce, Luquillo and Vieques, with an Alamo rental car for the main island, carefully selected accommodation and some memorable experiences along the way. But as with all our holidays, it’s simply a starting point. We can tailor the itinerary to suit your interests, preferred pace and travel style. Because the best USA holidays aren’t necessarily about visiting the places everyone already knows. Sometimes they’re about discovering somewhere you never expected.

What a great holiday! A big thank you must go to Andrew and his team at Travel USA for helping us put together such a fantastic trip. We basically told Andrew what we wanted – where we wanted to go, how long we wanted to be away, the “touristy” things we wanted to see, and the music-related places and events we wanted to visit. From there, he listened to what we had to say, offered advice and recommendations, and put together a detailed itinerary that we were very happy with.Of course, the itinerary had to be changed a few times – mostly because of us! – but Andrew was always so obliging, helpful and easy to deal with.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Andrew and his team at Travel USA to anyone planning a trip to the USA. They made the whole process easy and enjoyable, and we look forward to catching up with Andrew again when we start planning our next trip! Thanks again, Andrew – we had an amazing time!

We used Travel USA to plan a 3-week trip around the States – we had the trip of a lifetime and saw so much more than we thought we would with Andrew’s great recommendations. They are very knowledgeable across all aspects of travel (city passes, best travel routes) and were immediately on hand whenever we had any questions or concerns at any point, even when we were over there. We also loved that Andrew provided such a detailed itinerary for us, including extra information or handy tips. Whether it’s planning what to see while you’re in the States or the best way to make the most of your time in a specific city, we highly recommend Travel USA.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)
You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
