Thinking of a NYC holiday? If you’re flying in from New Zealand, Midtown Manhattan is likely the first place you’ll land on your must-see list. And sure, it’s packed with icons like Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and Broadway shows that are hard to miss. But trust us, New York has so much more to offer if you’re willing to go a little off the main grid. Moving beyond Midtown opens up relaxed, lively neighbourhoods, incredible food, and surprising green spaces just a short subway ride away.
That’s where thoughtful NYC tour packages can really come into their own. They aren’t about ticking off tourist attractions. They’re about slowing down, enjoying the city’s personality, and seeing the parts of New York that feel more like real-life than postcard pictures. Let’s look at a few ways Kiwi travellers can experience a deeper side of the city without giving up on those can’t-miss highlights.
Discovering the Neighbourhoods That Locals Love
Step outside the Midtown loop, and the real city comes alive. Brooklyn is a great first move. Places like Dumbo, with its cobblestone streets and perfect views of the Manhattan Bridge and amazing views back at Manhattan, are perfect for a lazy stroll with camera in hand. Not far from there, neighbourhoods like Park Slope give you cute streets filled with brownstones, pizza shops, and playgrounds. It’s an easy place to spend half a day without having anything “scheduled” except lunch and a wander.
Then there’s Harlem. It’s home to the Apollo Theater, where huge names in music got their start, and still holds strong jazz and gospel traditions. You can grab brunch at a proper soul food restaurant and feel like you’re eating NYC history. Brilliant independent galleries can be found as well, especially those focused on African-American culture and storytelling.
If food and street art are more your thing, the Lower East Side might top your list. It’s a mix of old and new—think classic Jewish bakeries, cool bagel joints, and tiny museums. It’s very walkable, full of character, and ideal for exploring by taste and sight.
Green Escapes in the Middle of It All
Big cities aren’t usually associated with nature, but New York is an unexpected exception. If you’ve already walked past Bethesda Fountain or rowed across the Central Park lake, there’s still more to see. Deeper into the park, especially near the North Woods, the noise fades and tree-covered paths make you forget you’re in a city of millions. Few tourists venture that far in, which makes the peaceful pockets even more special.
Further west, the High Line gives you a completely different way to see NYC. It’s an elevated park built on old rail lines, and walking it means floating above streets filled with murals and views of the Hudson River. It ends near Hudson Yards, where you can grab a great coffee and people-watch for a bit.
Prospect Park in Brooklyn is another standout. Designed by the same team as Central Park, it’s larger and usually less crowded. With its lake, cycle paths, sports fields, and weekend farmers market, it’s where locals go to unwind.
Travel USA’s NYC tour packages offer options that include bike hire or horse drawn carriage rides for Central Park, guided walking tours in Prospect Park, and local-led discovery days in Brooklyn neighbourhoods.
Iconic Views Without the Midtown Crowds
Not every skyline view needs to come from the Empire State Building. One of the best ways to see the city is from the Roosevelt Island Tramway. This cable car glides across the East River, giving unique views of Manhattan as it heads toward Roosevelt Island. It’s included in a subway pass so it is easy to plan into the day.
For water views, the Staten Island Ferry is free and a favourite with locals. It runs often and serves up photo-worthy glimpses of the Statue of Liberty and downtown. Sunset or early evening is ideal for soaking in the scenery.
If you’re after a higher-up experience, One World Observatory offers full-circle views across New York Harbour and the boroughs. It’s less hectic atmosphere adds to the experience, especially for adults or anyone who’s done the older iconic towers before. On the hand the newest and highest outdoor skydeck in the western hemisphere, the Edge at the Hudson Yards, not for the faint hearted with the glass walls and floor with views suspended 100 stories high above Manhattan is a thrilling experience.
Taste the Real Flavours of NYC
Food in New York is its own reason to visit, but skipping the big-name chains helps unlock some of the best city memories. Queens is the ultimate spot for global eats, with blocks of neighbourhoods serving everything from Indonesian to Korean BBQ. Each meal is different and rarely touristy.
Chelsea Market is a great choice for those who want a bit of everything. The stalls change often, so one visit might be all about seafood while the next could be tacos and sweets. Smorgasbord, an outdoor market, draws locals for its variety and creative bites – perfect for group tastings or family food trails.
Personalised NYC customised packages can take you through local favourites, from late-night pizza counters in the West Village to rooftop bars on the Lower East Side and Little Italy a taste of Europe on your doorstep. These spots rarely make the guidebooks but form many of the best “only in New York” stories.
The Value of Local-Led and Tailormade Tour Packages
There’s a lot to see in NYC, but enjoying it at your own pace makes all the difference. That’s where NYC tailormade tour packages shine. Rather than chasing every sight, they help you pick what will suit your group – whether that means mix-and-match walking tours, focus days for family-friendly fun, or routes through the city built around music or architecture interests.
With travel time often limited for New Zealanders, guided or local-led tours add value by helping you make more of your trip. Knowing when to move, which stations to use, or how to avoid the busiest times transforms the city from overwhelming to manageable. Instead of feeling rushed, your time in New York can feel easy.
An example of the NYC packages offered by Travel USA can include pre-booked tickets to the Statue of Liberty, Broadway shows, who’s in town for a concert evening or experience an all American sporting game and theme-based neighbourhood discovery days, making each holiday truly your own.
Your Kind of NYC, Your Kind of Holiday
There’s always more to New York than you find on your first visit. Looking past Midtown lets you enjoy both the icons and the local treasures. From leafy strolls in city parks to surprise food stops in Queens, every day in NYC can feel like a fresh adventure.
Travel USA helps Kiwis experience New York the way locals do – relaxed, curious, and never stuck in the same old loop. With more choice and less stress, your holiday will reflect the best of the city, with stories and memories ready to bring home.
There’s more to New York than just ticking off the landmarks, and our NYC tours packages are built to capture that. We craft each itinerary to suit Kiwi travellers who want a mix of big-name highlights and local finds that feel off the radar. From rooftop sunsets to insider food spots and easy ways to get around, our planning brings the best of the city together. At Travel USA, we make exploring New York feel exciting, doable and completely your own – let’s start planning today.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)
You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
