Your Katmai Bear Viewing Adventure begins at Lake Hood in Anchorage – where you’ll board a floatplane for an unforgettable flight to Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park. This remote and remarkable destination offers one of the world’s best opportunities to observe Alaska’s iconic brown bears in the wild. Three viewing platforms linked by raised boardwalks give you safe and unobstructed views of the bears as they gather to feast on spawning salmon in the Brooks River. During peak season in July, it’s not uncommon to see dozens of bears fishing, play-fighting, and roaming the riverbanks. The experience is self-guided, but knowledgeable park rangers provide a welcome orientation on arrival and are on hand throughout the area. At busy times, they may manage access to certain platforms to preserve the experience for everyone — but with so many bears and vantage points, you’ll still have plenty of extraordinary viewing opportunities.
