Kentucky Horse Farms and Bourbon Country for Kiwi Travellers

Published on : February 19, 2026

Explore Kentucky: Horse Farms, Bourbon Trails, and Iconic Experiences

Kentucky is where thoroughbreds graze under white fences and the air carries the faint scent of oak barrels and sweet corn mash. Known as the Bourbon and Horse Capital of the World, it’s perfect for Kiwi travellers who love racing, breeding, bourbon, and relaxed rural landscapes. For those used to early mornings at the track or weekends at the races, Kentucky feels both familiar yet thrillingly different.

At Travel USA, we create itineraries that let you see the best of the state at a comfortable pace. In one trip you can explore horse farms, taste bourbon, and take in local culture, all while enjoying Southern hospitality and countryside that rivals any back road at home.

Inside Kentucky’s Horse Country

Central Kentucky is the heart of thoroughbred breeding and training. Limestone-rich soil, gentle hills, and four distinct seasons make it ideal for raising strong, healthy horses. Mile after mile of paddocks, barns, and training tracks makes the countryside feel alive with the rhythm of the racing calendar.

Racing Highlights: Churchill Downs, Keeneland & the Derby

The Kentucky Derby is not just a race — it’s a 151-year-old tradition and a cultural event that draws people from around the world. Known as “The Run for the Roses,” it combines elite racing with a carnival-like atmosphere that runs all week. The track bursts with colour, from elaborate hats in the stands to the famous blanket of roses draped over the winner. For Kiwis, the Derby is unlike any day at the races back home – the scale, the pageantry, and the infield parties make it a unique, all-American spectacle. You still get the thrill of the barrier, trackside form talk, and proud owners, but it’s paired with mint juleps, traditions like the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home,” and a festival-like energy that runs through the whole city.

Racing in Kentucky isn’t just about the Derby, though. Top-class racing continues year-round at Churchill Downs and Keeneland, where you can see dirt tracks, starting gates, and world-class thoroughbreds in action. The Kentucky Derby Museum located at the iconic Churchill Downs racetrack brings history to life with interactive displays and behind-the-scenes stories. Louisville’s other attractions, like the Louisville Slugger Museum and Muhammad Ali Centre, add cultural depth to round out any visit.

Bowling Green, Mammoth Cave & the National Corvette Museum

Southwest Kentucky offers a mix of adventure and history. Bowling Green is home to the National Corvette Museum, showcasing America’s iconic sports car, which has been built exclusively at the nearby General Motors Assembly Plant since 1981 – making it the only place in the world where Corvettes are manufactured today.

A short drive away is Mammoth Cave National Park, the world’s longest known cave system. Guided tours reveal vast chambers, stalactites, and underground rivers, offering a different kind of adventure alongside the bluegrass scenery. Combined, Bowling Green, the Corvette Museum, and Mammoth Cave make Southwest Kentucky a rewarding stop that goes beyond horses and bourbon

Touring Bourbon Country

Kentucky is the spiritual home of bourbon. Heritage distilleries and boutique producers craft whiskey with majority-corn mash, charred oak barrels, and a smooth, slightly sweet flavour.

A bourbon day might include visits to Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Maker’s Mark, and Jim Beam, learning about mash bills, barrel ageing, and warehouse conditions. Tastings are paired with meals or snacks, and the pace is relaxed, letting you enjoy each stop without rushing.

Designing a Kentucky Horse and Bourbon Itinerary

Many Kiwi travellers start their Kentucky adventure in Louisville, a city known for its horse racing heritage, bourbon culture, and vibrant city attractions. From there, it’s easy to explore surrounding horse country in Lexington, and venture southwest to Bowling Green, Mammoth Cave, and the National Corvette Museum. For those looking to extend their trip, Nashville is just a couple of hours’ drive away, making it simple to combine music, culture, and countryside in one itinerary.

Travel USA can create an adventure to suit but a sample itinerary could include:

  • Mornings at horse farms around Lexington, including Godolphin at Jonabell Farm
  • Afternoon bourbon tastings at Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Maker’s Mark, and Jim Beam
  • Stops in historic towns with antique shops, local diners, and friendly locals
  • Scenic drives through rolling bluegrass countryside with photo stops and short walks
  • Louisville attractions: Kentucky Derby Museum, Louisville Slugger Museum, Muhammad Ali Centre

Visits can be timed for foaling season, major horse sales, quieter months, or racing events at Churchill Downs and Keeneland. Packages can also link with Nashville or New York for a wider USA holiday, making it easy to combine horses, bourbon, and cultural highlights.

Turn Kentucky Dreams into Reality

Every Kiwi traveller comes with different goals. Some want up-close access to breeding and training; others prefer relaxed mornings watching trackwork, afternoons tasting bourbon, or simply driving the open roads and soaking up the charm of Kentucky’s small towns.

At Travel USA, we specialise in personalised USA itineraries for Kiwi travellers. From horse farms and bourbon distilleries to scenic drives, historic towns, and Louisville’s cultural highlights, we design trips that feel personal, relaxed, and memorable. Kentucky can be the focus or part of a broader American adventure, giving you the freedom to experience everything this state has to offer – from bluegrass countryside and racing traditions to local food, culture, and hidden gems along the way.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We’ve been back a week and had time to reflect on what was a fantastic trip to Colorado and Chicago. Thanks for all your assistance with our trip – it was the best US trip we have had so far

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

His knowledge, travel tips, and thoughtful check-ins made the whole trip completely seamless and his attention to detail and genuine care took all the stress out of travelling. Highly recommend Travel USA for anyone wanting a hassle-free, expertly planned adventure.

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)

You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
