Explore Missouri – A Road Trip Through the Heart of America

When you think about planning a USA road trip, Missouri probably isn’t the first state that comes to mind. California has its Pacific coastline. Arizona has the Grand Canyon. Wyoming has Yellowstone. And Florida has its famous theme parks and beaches.

But what if some of America’s most interesting travel experiences are found in the places that don’t always make the headlines? Welcome to Missouri.

Here, the Mississippi River meets the stories of America’s westward expansion. Jazz and barbecue are part of everyday life. Route 66 history lives on in classic motor courts and roadside attractions. And beyond the cities, the wooded hills, lakes and small towns of the Ozarks offer an entirely different side of America. It’s a state that rewards curiosity, and one that we think deserves a much closer look.

St. Louis – Where the Journey Begins

There’s no better place to begin exploring Missouri than St. Louis, a city whose history is closely connected to the story of America itself. Standing beside the Mississippi River, the iconic Gateway Arch is a reminder of the explorers, pioneers and settlers who travelled west in search of new opportunities. Today, visitors can ride to the top for sweeping views across the city and river, explore the museum beneath the Arch and discover more of St. Louis’s remarkable past.

But there’s much more to St. Louis than its most famous landmark. Forest Park is home to some of the city’s leading cultural attractions, including the Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum and Saint Louis Zoo. Historic neighbourhoods reveal beautiful architecture, local restaurants and a food scene with its own distinctive traditions.

From St. Louis-style barbecue and toasted ravioli to neighbourhood food tours, this is a city that offers plenty of reasons to linger. And that’s exactly what we recommend doing. Rather than arriving and immediately heading out on the highway, spend a few days getting to know St. Louis. It’s a wonderful introduction to Missouri and a great way to ease into your road trip.

Hannibal – In the Footsteps of Mark Twain

Follow the Mississippi River north and you’ll arrive in Hannibal, a small town with an extraordinary literary connection. This is where Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, spent his childhood. The river, the people and the adventures he experienced here would later inspire some of America’s best-known stories, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Today, visitors can explore the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum, wander through the historic downtown streets and discover the riverfront that played such an important role in his imagination.

Hannibal is also a reminder of why smaller towns are such an important part of a great American road trip. It’s not necessarily about ticking off attractions. Sometimes it’s simply about strolling along Main Street, stopping for a coffee, browsing a local shop or enjoying an evening beside the Mississippi. These are the experiences that give a journey its character.

Kansas City – Jazz, Barbecue and American History

Kansas City is one of Missouri’s great surprises. For many travellers, the city is best known for its barbecue, and with good reason. Kansas City has developed its own celebrated tradition of slow-smoked meats, rich sauces and neighbourhood barbecue restaurants, making a guided tasting tour one of the most enjoyable ways to discover the local food scene. But Kansas City’s cultural story runs much deeper.

In the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District, the American Jazz Museum celebrates the musicians and clubs that helped shape the city’s distinctive sound. Nearby, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum tells the important story of African American baseball and the remarkable players who helped change American sport. The National WWI Museum and Memorial offers another fascinating experience, exploring the events and lasting consequences of the First World War. Then there’s Union Station, a beautifully restored railway landmark with an impressive Great Hall, and the free KC Streetcar, a fun way to explore downtown and its surrounding neighbourhoods.

Kansas City deserves more than a quick overnight stop. With three nights, there’s time to enjoy the museums, discover the music, explore the city and, of course, sample plenty of barbecue.

Springfield – The Birthplace of Route 66

For anyone who loves the romance of the great American road trip, Springfield is a particularly special stop. It was here in 1926 that the name Route 66 was proposed for the highway that would become one of the most famous roads in the world. Now, a century later, the spirit of the Mother Road remains an important part of Springfield’s identity. The History Museum on the Square explores the city’s past and its Route 66 connections, while the Route 66 Car Museum appeals to anyone with an interest in classic American motoring.

Even the accommodation can become part of the experience. The historic Best Western Route 66 Rail Haven opened in 1938 and once welcomed Elvis Presley as a guest. Staying in a classic motor court like this adds another chapter to the road-trip story. Springfield also offers some unexpected attractions beyond Route 66. Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium is an impressive celebration of wildlife and conservation, while nearby Fantastic Caverns offers the unusual experience of exploring an underground cave system on a guided ride-through tour. It’s an interesting combination of American motoring history, museums and Ozarks heritage, and well worth spending a couple of nights exploring.

Branson – Entertainment in the Heart of the Ozarks

With more than 100 live shows to choose from each season, ranging from musical variety performances and tribute acts to country music, comedy and family entertainment, Branson has earned its reputation as one of America’s leading live entertainment destinations. But the appeal extends well beyond the theatres.

Silver Dollar City is one of America’s most distinctive theme parks, combining thrilling rides and live entertainment with traditional Ozarks craftsmanship. Visitors can watch artisans demonstrating skills such as glassblowing, blacksmithing and woodcarving, explore recreated 1880s streets and discover the fascinating underground formations of Marvel Cave. Nearby, Table Rock Lake and the surrounding hills provide a beautiful natural setting, while Historic Downtown Branson and Branson Landing offer shops, restaurants and a lively atmosphere.

What makes Branson interesting is the contrast. One moment you’re enjoying a live show, and the next you’re driving through wooded hills or relaxing beside the lake. It’s a different side of Missouri, and one that adds plenty of variety to the journey.

Lake of the Ozarks – Time to Slow Down

After exploring Missouri’s cities, museums and entertainment, the Lake of the Ozarks offers an opportunity to change pace. This popular holiday region is known for its winding waterways, forested hills, scenic drives and lakeside communities. It’s the sort of place where you can spend an afternoon enjoying the views, exploring a state park or simply finding a waterfront restaurant and watching the world go by.

One of the area’s most interesting attractions is Ha Ha Tonka State Park, where the stone ruins of an early 20th-century mansion overlook the surrounding landscape. With natural bridges, limestone formations and walking trails, it’s a memorable combination of history and scenery. We particularly like including the Lake of the Ozarks in a longer Missouri itinerary because it introduces a completely different atmosphere. Not every day of a road trip needs to be filled with sightseeing. Sometimes the best part of the journey is having the freedom to stop, relax and enjoy where you are.

Jefferson City and Hermann – History, Heritage and Wine Country

Missouri’s capital, Jefferson City, is another worthwhile stop as you travel through the state. Overlooking the Missouri River, the State Capitol provides an impressive introduction to Missouri’s political history and heritage. From here, continue into the Missouri River Valley towards Hermann, one of the state’s most charming small towns.

Founded by German immigrants in the 19th century, Hermann retains a distinctive European influence in its architecture, traditions and winemaking heritage. Historic buildings, local shops, welcoming restaurants and established wineries make it a lovely place to spend a night before returning to St. Louis. And after nearly two weeks exploring Missouri, it’s a fitting final stop. Hermann isn’t about grand attractions or packed sightseeing schedules. It’s about atmosphere, local character and discovering another part of America that many international visitors never get to experience.

Why Missouri Makes Such a Great Road Trip

What makes Missouri particularly appealing is the variety it offers within a single state. In the space of two weeks, you can explore the history of America’s westward expansion, follow in the footsteps of Mark Twain, discover the birthplace of Route 66, enjoy world-class museums, experience live jazz and entertainment, sample legendary barbecue and relax amongst the lakes and wooded hills of the Ozarks. And you can do it all without spending every day covering enormous distances.

That’s an important part of how we approach road-trip planning at Travel USA. We don’t believe the best itinerary is necessarily the one that includes the most places. It’s the one that gives you enough time to appreciate them. Missouri is particularly well suited to that approach, with a combination of major cities, interesting smaller towns, historic highways and scenic countryside that makes the journey itself part of the experience. There will always be famous attractions worth visiting, but often it’s the unexpected stops, local conversations and discoveries along the way that stay with you longest.

BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE OUR MISSOURI

This is the most important part. Explore Missouri is a suggested itinerary. You can book it as we’ve designed it, but you certainly don’t have to.

Perhaps you’re a Route 66 enthusiast and would like longer in Springfield. Maybe live music is your thing, and you’d prefer an extra night in Kansas City or Branson. You might want more time relaxing beside the Lake of the Ozarks, exploring Missouri’s wine country or discovering the smaller towns along the way. Or perhaps 15 days in Missouri is only the beginning. You could continue along Route 66 towards Oklahoma and Texas, head south into Arkansas or combine Missouri with a longer journey through America’s Midwest.

You can change the hotels, change the vehicle, add experiences, remove experiences or combine Missouri with another part of America altogether. That’s where we come in. As New Zealand’s only travel company dedicated 100% to leisure travel to the USA, we spend our days planning American holidays for Kiwi travellers. We know that a good self-drive itinerary isn’t simply a line drawn between cities. It’s getting the distances right. Choosing where to spend two nights and where to spend four. Knowing when an experience is worth including and when you’re better off leaving some free time. And making sure the whole thing actually works once you get there.

READY TO EXPLORE MISSOURI?

If your idea of Missouri already involves the Gateway Arch, Route 66 and Kansas City barbecue, great! We’ll give you all three. We’ll just add Mark Twain’s Hannibal, jazz in Kansas City, the National WWI Museum and Memorial, classic American motor courts, live entertainment in Branson, the beautiful Ozarks, historic small towns and Missouri wine country.
Jazz. Barbecue. Route 66. And plenty in between.

We recently travelled to the USA with Travel USA. Andrew gave us a wonderful itinerary for the National Parks.  His knowledge of the areas was much appreciated. We had an amazing time visiting Las Vegas, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Page, Monument Valley, Moab, Salt Lake City, Jackson Hole & Yellowstone. In each area we visited, Andrew gave us tips on what to see, and this was very helpful. We loved our time in the USA and can’t thank Andrew enough for his wonderful service and always keeping us informed.  We would recommend using Travel USA to anyone.

What a great holiday!
A big thank you must go to Andrew and his team at Travel USA for helping us put together such a fantastic trip. We basically told Andrew what we wanted – where we wanted to go, how long we wanted to be away, the “touristy” things we wanted to see, and the music-related places and events we wanted to visit. From there, he listened to what we had to say, offered advice and recommendations, and put together a detailed itinerary that we were very happy with.Of course, the itinerary had to be changed a few times – mostly because of us! – but Andrew was always so obliging, helpful and easy to deal with.

We would have no hesitation in recommending Andrew and his team at Travel USA to anyone planning a trip to the USA. They made the whole process easy and enjoyable, and we look forward to catching up with Andrew again when we start planning our next trip! Thanks again, Andrew – we had an amazing time!

Andrew listened to our US travel wishes and delivered an epic detailed itinerary that exceeded expectations. We had a fabulous balance of tourist highlights and excursions that kept us engaged, while allowing plenty of time to explore and experience the local living environment. With Andrew’s expert recommendations and guidance, we achieved far more than we would have by researching and booking by ourselves. Travel USA is highly recommended, and we will definitely engage Andrew and his team for the next US trip.

We used Travel USA to plan a 3-week trip around the States – we had the trip of a lifetime and saw so much more than we thought we would with Andrew’s great recommendations. They are very knowledgeable across all aspects of travel (city passes, best travel routes) and were immediately on hand whenever we had any questions or concerns at any point, even when we were over there. We also loved that Andrew provided such a detailed itinerary for us, including extra information or handy tips. Whether it’s planning what to see while you’re in the States or the best way to make the most of your time in a specific city, we highly recommend Travel USA.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

His knowledge, travel tips, and thoughtful check-ins made the whole trip completely seamless and his attention to detail and genuine care took all the stress out of travelling. Highly recommend Travel USA for anyone wanting a hassle-free, expertly planned adventure.

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)

You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
