California in Summer: Where to Go Beyond the Beaches

Published on : December 26, 2025

When most people picture California in summer, the first thing that often comes to mind is the coastline. The long stretches of sand, the surf, the boardwalks. But there’s a whole other side to the Golden State that’s just as sunny and far less crowded. For New Zealanders planning their USA holiday packages, exploring beyond the beaches can open up a different kind of summer.

From quiet mountain towns to desert hideaways and scenic inland drives, California does variety well. And when you’re not locked into busy coastal hotspots, there’s a better chance to slow down and shape the trip your way. These inland destinations still give you sunshine and atmosphere, just with more room to breathe.

Northern California – Nature and Mountain Vibes

If you’re after a breezier, forest-filled summer, Northern California has the kind of scenery that makes you stop the car just to take it all in. Lake Tahoe is a great place to start. Perched on the border with Nevada, it’s crystal clear with pine-covered hills rising around it. Whether you’re hiking the lower trails, swimming off the rocks, hiring a kayak or just hanging out at the marina, everything here happens at a slower speed.

Yosemite National Park is always impressive, but in the warmer months, it feels alive in a different way. Think sky-high granite cliffs, wide meadows, rushing streams and panoramic views from places like Glacier Point. It does get visitors in summer, so early morning outings often give you the best chance to see places like Yosemite Falls without a crowd. Not far away is Mammoth Lakes, with stunning views and outdoor adventurers playground & hikers dream, hidden jems like The Devils Postpile National Monument and Rainbow Falls. With Mammoth being right on the back door of Yosemite is well worth a visit.

If you’d rather stay a bit closer to the coast, Muir Woods has a more intimate experience on offer. Towering redwoods line short, flat walking tracks only a short drive from San Francisco. Couple that with a relaxed afternoon in Napa or Sonoma where you can sip your way through smaller local wineries (no need to only visit the famous ones) and you’ve got the makings of a refreshing day away from beach umbrellas.

Travel USA’s USA holiday packages can include a mix of Lake Tahoe stays, advance National Park entries for Yosemite, and vineyard tours through the Napa Valley.

Small Towns and Desert Escapes

California’s deserts might not scream “summer holiday” to everyone, but once you’re there, it makes perfect sense. Palm Springs has been a favourite warm-weather spot for decades with its retro design, deep swimming pools and local galleries tucked between palm-lined streets. There’s a proper summer rhythm about it, where afternoons are best spent poolside and dinner and entertainment always happens after the sun dips.

Not far from there is Joshua Tree. This park looks nothing like the forests or beaches the state is known for, and that’s what makes it interesting. Bizarre rock formations, almost cartoon-like trees, and star-studded night skies all add up to an otherworldly experience. It feels remote in the best kind of way.

If you’re after less heat and more charm, towns like Ojai and Solvang are strong picks. Ojai leans into its artsy, local vibe, while Solvang brings a touch of Danish architecture, pastry shops and a different kind of California setting. These spots work well as overnight breaks or weekend relaxers if you’re road tripping inland.

USA holiday packages can include overnight desert stays, boutique accommodation in Solvang, and guided hikes in Joshua Tree to experience the stars.

Road Trip Highlights Without the Coast

Sometimes it’s the sections between places that end up being your favourite part. California’s inland routes offer lots of those moments. Driving through Sequoia and Kings Canyon means crossing into a land of giant trees that have stood for millennia. Roads weave through dense forest, and every so often, they open up to deep valleys and stunning viewpoints worth lingering over.

If you’re planning one of those long cross-state drives, linking Route 66 segments with former Gold Rush towns like Sutter Creek or Nevada City adds plenty of colour. These towns are full of wooden shop fronts, old saloons and shady verandas. It’s a good reminder that California wasn’t just built on coastlines.

The nice thing here is how well these routes slot into most USA holiday packages. Whether you’re picking up a car from San Francisco or cruising inland from LA, the inland stops offer something fresher and often, quieter than the main tourist runs. Planning them into your itinerary adds a rhythm to the trip that doesn’t call for endless freeway time.

Family-Friendly California Beyond the Beach

If you’re travelling with kids and looking for more than shovels and sunscreen, summer inland opens up some great options. Sacramento often gets skipped but has a hands-on charm that works well for families. The California State Railroad Museum is a proper hit with train lovers, and the riverfront stretches are great walking and cycling areas.

Further down, Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea sit by the water, but they’re not your usual beach towns. Monterey has the aquarium, sea otters, and walking paths by the bay. Carmel has art galleries, courtyard cafes and a residential feel that’s very different from the bigger California cities. They both offer more space for play and discovery without long queues or resort crowds.

If you’re heading up into the far north of the state, Lake Shasta is a local go-to that hasn’t gone international. Houseboats dot the lake, summer rentals fill with families, and the surrounding trails are full of places to bike, picnic or fish. Mammoth Lakes, higher up in the Sierra Nevada, is another solid choice with clear waters, adventure parks and wide-open views – best reached with a bit of planning but worth the effort.

The Cities With a Different Summer Beat

Not all California cities follow the same script. San Francisco in summer doesn’t turn up the heat like the south, which can be a perk if you’re after cooler days and breezy walks. Grab a cable car, wander the Ferry Building market or take in the bay views from Golden Gate Park. It’s layered, fun and a bit unpredictable, which works well if you’re willing to try a few different neighbourhoods.

Parts of Los Angeles can surprise you too. Away from the coast, there’s hiking in Griffith Park, independent stores across Highland Park and favourites like the Original Farmers Market. It might be the city of movies, but on foot, you see it at a very different pace.

If you want something less polished and more local, cities like Fresno and Bakersfield are refreshingly real. Summer brings food festivals, markets and a casual rhythm with more low-key charm. They’re well-placed as overnight breaks if you’re road tripping between national parks or aiming for a mix of countryside and city nights.

Twilight descends over a scenic observatory in Los Angeles, as visitors enjoy panoramic views of the city stretched out beneath a gradient sunset sky.

Why California Deserves a Second Look in Summer

California doesn’t have to mean beach towels and packed parking lots. Its inland towns, desert views and forested parks feel just as summery, with the bonus of more space and easier planning. When you skip the busy coastal track, there’s more room for the kind of holiday that matches your pace.

Mixing well-known parks with small towns and local flavour gives you an experience that feels richer. And with USA holiday packages that are easy to adjust, you’re not stuck with standard stops. You get to pick what matters – and go where the roads are a little less worn.

There’s more to a California summer than sunbathers and surfboards. Inland parks, character-filled small towns and wide-open road trip routes can bring a different take to your trip. Whether you’re keen on national parks, passing through old Gold Rush stops or just wanting a cooler pace, we can plan something that suits how you like to travel. Take a look at how our USA holiday packages can bring some of California’s quieter corners into your plans. When you’re ready to start shaping it, Travel USA is here to help make it happen.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We’ve been back a week and had time to reflect on what was a fantastic trip to Colorado and Chicago. Thanks for all your assistance with our trip – it was the best US trip we have had so far

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)

You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
