Western USA Road Trips and National Park Adventures

Published on : January 9, 2026

Western USA feels like it was made for USA road trips. Big skies, epic highways, red rock canyons, and mountain valleys, this part of the States is packed with wild beauty and classic Americana. It is a great choice for Kiwi travellers keen to skip the big cities and spend a bit more time out on the road, where each day brings something new.

From famous national parks to small country towns, cowboy culture to canyon views, this region stretches across some of the USA’s most iconic sights. It is especially popular for custom self-drive holidays that focus on scenery, space, and freedom. If you are already planning your next major trip in the Northern Hemisphere summer, now is the perfect time to start considering your route.

Cowboy Country Meets Canyon Country: Exploring the Landmarks

Few destinations sum up the West like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. But that is just the start.

• Yellowstone National Park is unforgettable with its roaming wildlife and geysers. It is the world’s first national park for a reason and works well as part of a loop through Wyoming and Montana.

• The Grand Canyon speaks for itself with donkey rides down the canyon, hiking tours or grand helicoptor excursions, but many travellers pair it with Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, or Horseshoe Bend, all within easy driving distance, making each experience unique.

• Arches and Canyonlands near Moab, Utah, are full of red rock formations that feel more like Mars than Earth.

The best part is how easily these spots connect. There are plenty of driving options between them, and extra experiences help bring it all to life, such as horseback riding, guided walks through ancient cliff dwellings, or an overnight stay at a working ranch.

Travel between these famous sites is scenic, often with breathtaking backdrops that change dramatically over just a few hours of driving. Many visitors find it worthwhile to plan an extra overnight stop en route, making the journey as interesting as the destinations themselves. Quirky roadside diners, local shops, and nature trails can add charm and diversity to your holiday routine.

Planning the Ultimate USA Road Trip

Planning a road trip across the Western USA is all about choosing how you want to travel and how much time you have. Some people prefer self-driving the whole way, while others like a mix of driving and small group experiences.

• Self-drive gives you full control of the day, ideal for families or relaxed travellers.

• Group day tours or park-led activities can be added at anchor points like Moab or Jackson Hole.

Classic driving routes include the loop from Las Vegas to Yellowstone (with Zion, Bryce, and the Grand Canyon in between), or from San Francisco across Yosemite, down through Death Valley, and over to Arizona. Many Kiwis also start or end their West Coast trips with time in California, particularly Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Palm Springs. Be ready for open highways, motel stays, local diners, and plenty of scenic detours.

We offer a variety of road trip options, including packages that blend iconic parks, small-town experiences, and big city entry or exits, designed just for New Zealanders wanting a seamless journey.

Flexibility is key when travelling in this region, as road conditions and weather may sometimes change your route. It is always good to check park openings and road advisories, especially in spring and late autumn. Routes are well-marked, fuel is available in most towns, and mobile coverage is generally reliable near major highways, but planning ahead ensures you maximise every travel day.

National Parks You’ll Never Forget

You could spend all summer visiting US national parks and still want more. Luckily, many of the most stunning ones are right in the West.

• Yellowstone (Wyoming): famous for its geysers, bison, and other wildlife. Allow at least three full days.

• Yosemite (California): towering cliffs, waterfalls, and ancient sequoias. Best from May onwards, as snow often lingers earlier.

• Zion and Bryce (Utah): ideal for short hikes and big canyon views. These parks are close together and easy to visit in one trip.

• Arches National Park (Utah): stunning arches & great hiking opportunities, Landscape Arch is the longest single spanning arch in the world.

• Grand Canyon (Arizona): iconic rim views, helicopter rides, and serious hiking options for those up for it.

Each park has its own personality, so your route can match your style. Some are ideal for short stays with scenic drives and easy walks, while others need more time if you want to camp or explore further. These decisions shape the flow of your holiday, so it helps to decide early on how active or relaxed you want to be.

Our expertise comes from over 35 years in the industry, and we know how to pace itineraries with the right balance of activity and downtime, from famous national parks to hidden gems off the tourist trail.

The vastness of the region means you can often combine multiple parks in one trip, creating a sense of adventure and achievement as you tick off incredible sites from your travel wish list. Consider arriving early to the parks for sunrise hikes, as the morning light makes for beautiful photos and less crowded trails.

The Magic of Route 66 in its 100th Year

For many Kiwi road trippers, Route 66 is the dream drive. With its 100-year anniversary coming up this year, there has never been a better time to experience it.

The western leg of the route is one of the most photogenic. Highlights include:

• Albuquerque, New Mexico: colourful old signs, murals, and diners

• Flagstaff, Arizona: a fun town close to the Grand Canyon

• Kingman, Arizona: great stretch of historic highway with original-era petrol stations and motels

Route 66 is perfect if your goal is to combine a low-key drive with quirky Americana. We often link Route 66 tours with bigger nature stops in Arizona or New Mexico. With so much to look at and so many choices, having your route mapped out in advance makes it easier to focus on the fun without missing out on the best bits.

As you travel Route 66, you will notice how the past and present blend along the road. Classic cars, memorabilia shops, and local diners add nostalgia and authenticity. Stopping in these towns gives a slice of American life that feels both unique and welcoming.

Discovering the Unexpected in the American West

Beyond the big names, the American West is full of places you may not have heard of yet. These hidden highlights often end up being the most memorable parts of a trip.

• Santa Fe, New Mexico: artsy, relaxed, and full of adobe-style architecture

• Jackson Hole, Wyoming: a great base for Grand Teton National Park

• Moab, Utah: close to Arches and Canyonlands, with loads of outdoor activities

• Palm Springs, California: mid-century design, warm weather, and boutique hotels, stunning golf courses.

It is easy to add one or two of these into a larger plan. They give your trip balance, with a few big days in the national parks followed by some quiet time in a cool little town. Whether you choose to spend a few extra nights or just make them scenic stopovers, these less famous destinations round out your holiday in a very satisfying way.

Each hidden town has its own backstory, adding culture and different culinary experiences. Spending an evening at a local gallery opening or farmer’s market can create unexpected highlights. These smaller places are also ideal for catching your breath between longer stints on the road.

Your Custom Adventure Awaits

Travelling through the American West gives you a holiday full of contrast, with long, wide highways one day, and deep green forests or red rocks the next. Planning around these open spaces can feel more relaxed than time in large cities, and you can shape your days around what matters to you most.

We specialise in helping New Zealand travellers create personalised American holidays, organising everything from car hire and accommodation to expert advice and 24/7 local support while you travel. With the right plan, you can take in the region’s breathtaking diversity at your own speed.

Ready to hit the open road? We design personalised routes through the American West to match your pace, interests, and travel style, whether it is national parks, small towns, or iconic stops like Route 66. Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We’ve been back a week and had time to reflect on what was a fantastic trip to Colorado and Chicago. Thanks for all your assistance with our trip – it was the best US trip we have had so far

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)

You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
