Everything Kiwis Need to Know About New Orleans Tour Packages
Published on : February 13, 2026
New Orleans has a way of sticking with you. It’s not just the music or the food, though both leave a strong impression. It’s more about the feel of the place. Whether you’ve always wanted to cruise down the Mississippi on a paddlewheeler, hear live jazz fill the night air, or dig into a proper po’boy, (Creole Cajun country classic sandwich) New Orleans makes it easy to fill each day with something you’ve never done before.
There are plenty of ways for Kiwi travellers to experience New Orleans, from guided day trips to curated itineraries, making it easy to enjoy the city without the stress of planning everything yourself.. A little planning goes a long way here. With the city’s mix of history, local flavour, and outdoor adventures, we recommend shaping your days with a clear sense of what makes each part of New Orleans worth slowing down for.
Why New Orleans is Worth the Trip
There’s nowhere in the USA quite like New Orleans. It blends cultures, cuisines, and traditions in a way that feels completely its own. Many visitors come for the music, but there’s far more here than jazz clubs.
On Frenchmen Street, live music pours out of nearly every doorway. You don’t need to plan your night, just wander until something catches your ear.
Bourbon Street offers a different kind of energy, where neon lights, bustling bars, and street performers create a vibrant, unforgettable atmosphere. It’s loud, lively, and quintessentially New Orleans.
Creole and Cajun food tours give you a taste of real local cooking, guided by people who’ve grown up with these recipes.
Stroll through the Garden District and you’ll feel the difference immediately – grand oaks, historic homes, and streets that seem frozen in time.
In the French Quarter, colourful streets are alive with jazz, cafés, and ornate balconies. Historic Jackson Square showcases artists, street performers, and the iconic St. Louis Cathedral at its heart. Horse-drawn carriages, beautiful gardens, and the vibrant atmosphere make it the perfect place to soak up the city’s rich culture and history.

New Orleans is lively and vibrant year-round, but spring and fall offer especially comfortable weather for exploring. Streets, music, and festivals are all on display, with the city’s energy at its best. Summer brings long days and warm evenings, perfect for late-night music, buzzing streets, and soaking up the unique atmosphere of Bourbon Street, Frenchmen Street, and the French Quarter.
Highlights of a Well-Curated New Orleans Experience
Some of the best experiences in New Orleans happen when your days are guided just enough to set the rhythm, while still leaving room for curiosity. Well-planned itineraries and guided experiences can help you make the most of the city without the stress of figuring it all out yourself.
Guided streetcar rides and cemetery tours let you discover the city’s fascinating history while moving comfortably from one highlight to the next.
Options range from private tours to small-group experiences, giving solo travellers, couples, or families the flexibility to explore in a way that suits them.
These itineraries blend structure with free time, so you can wander at your own pace but still cover the city’s essential sights.
Walk from one neighbourhood to the next, hop on a streetcar, or join a guided tour that uncovers hidden corners and stories you might not have found on your own – removing the guesswork lets you relax and truly soak in New Orleans.
Day Trips and Regional Add-Ons
It’s easy to stay planted in New Orleans, but the surrounding region offers just as much to see – and most of it can be done in a day. Short trips from the city are often included in our packages, especially for travellers wanting to experience more of Louisiana without packing and unpacking again.
A Steamboat Natchez river cruise on the Mississippi gives you a dose of old-world charm. Enjoy lunch or dinner while taking in the live music, steam engines, and leisurely turns along the river.
The nearby Atchafalaya Basin and bayous feel like a world away. Airboat rides and swamp tours bring this unique ecosystem and its wildlife up close.
Louisiana’s historic plantations are also within easy reach. Visit Oak Alley, Whitney, Laura, and Houmas House to explore grand antebellum homes, lush gardens, and rich local history.
If you’re pairing destinations, New Orleans connects beautifully with other Southern cities like Nashville, Memphis, or Austin, giving a broader sense of the region’s music, cuisine, and culture.
For travellers on a longer USA holiday, New Orleans works perfectly as either a soft opener or a strong finish, the flavour of Louisiana tends to stay with you long after you leave.
What Kiwi Travellers Should Keep in Mind
When planning a visit from New Zealand, it helps to think about how each day plays out on the ground. The atmosphere in New Orleans is lively by nature, but there’s no rush to do everything at once.
Build in extra breathing room when you’re settling into your days. Wandering the French Quarter or sitting at a street café counts just as much as sightseeing.
Locals are open and keen to talk, guided tours do more than get you from A to B, they often lead to deeper stories about the city that you won’t find in a travel guide.
The historic plantations of New Orleans reveal grand architecture, oak-lined avenues, and complex stories of wealth, culture, and slavery.
Meals tend to be rich and full of flavour. Music plays long into the night. Trying to do multiple big-ticket items in the same day usually feels like too much.
Think of your itinerary as a guide, not a race. Let your curiosity lead, but leave space to enjoy whatever you stumble into.
How Personalised Experiences Make Your Trip
Not every visitor comes to New Orleans for the same reason, and that’s where tailored itineraries and guided experiences make all the difference. With so many layers to the city, shaping your trip around your interests makes it easier to connect with what feels meaningful to you.
Some travellers are drawn to the city’s architecture, from Creole cottages to Greek Revival mansions, and want time to take it all in.
Others come for music, filling whole days listening to jazz, brass bands, and learning how it has shaped the local culture.
Food lovers can plan for cooking classes or walking tours centred on hidden local favourites and authentic Creole and Cajun cuisine.
Using expert advice to build these itineraries avoids the stress of second-guessing. Routes make sense, downtime is included, and every moment counts. Whether adding New Orleans to a broader Southern road trip or focusing solely on the city, a personalised approach lets you settle in and experience it more thoughtfully.
At Travel USA, we specialise in fully managed New Orleans experiences for Kiwi travellers, including curated music, food, and culture itineraries. As New Zealand’s only dedicated USA specialists, our team provides hands-on support before and during your holiday, helping you enjoy everything that makes New Orleans unique.
Turn Jazz Dreams into Real Journeys
We’ve seen time and again how New Orleans rewards travellers who show up with a little sense of purpose. The streets, the sounds, the faces, they all make more sense when your holiday is shaped around the things you enjoy most.
Maybe you’ve always wanted to stand in a room full of live brass music, take a seat at a long wooden bar and try your first bowl of gumbo (a heavily seasoned stew), or simply walk under rows of balconies taking in all the atmosphere. With the right preparation, those experiences happen naturally and leave space for unexpected moments too.
New Orleans can fill your days or let you take them slow. Getting the balance right is part of what makes this corner of Louisiana so good for Kiwi travellers wanting something a bit different, something with flavour and feeling. The best trips often aren’t the ones we rush through, but the ones we get to enjoy one slow step at a time.
Imagine evenings filled with jazz, days spent sampling local flavours, and the gentle pace of true southern charm, let us turn that vision into a memorable getaway. Whether you’re dreaming of lively nights out, scenic steamboat cruises, or time to absorb the culture that sets Louisiana apart, our tailor-made trips handle all the details so you can simply enjoy. We’ll help you strike the perfect balance between guided experiences and free time so your holiday runs exactly how you like. Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)
You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
