There is a reason New York State is always on the radar when it comes to planning USA holidays. It is a favourite for many Kiwi travellers because it truly does offer everything, from iconic city sightseeing to wide open country drives. Whether you are drawn to bright lights or quiet lakes, famous food spots or forest trails, there is just so much variation in one place.
For those piecing together custom New York travel packages, this state can be the headline act or the perfect start to an East Coast self-drive itinerary. With a bit of planning, you can combine city energy with natural escapes and lesser-known gems that give extra flavour to your journey. New York State is big, but the travel pace can be as fast or laid-back as you like.
Exploring New York City: Where It All Begins
Most USA trips from New Zealand begin with a stop in New York City. It is the city we all picture when we think of the USA. Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Broadway shows and yellow taxis. But beyond the essentials, there is much more to experience depending on your interests and energy levels.
For classic sightseeing, we often suggest reserving time for the Empire State Building, a Staten Island ferry ride, or a walk or cycle across the Brooklyn Bridge or Manhattan Bridge and visit Dumbo a unique place with cobblestone stone streets, art galleries and hip shops. Take advantage of the most famous view point looking back at the city.
For something with more local colour, neighbourhoods like Harlem, the Lower East Side, and Williamsburg offer great food and people-watching.
For more relaxing nature filled day, walking around Central Park is not to be missed, you can also go on the classic horse drawn carriage ride for something memorable. Cycle around the park exporing all the different aspects of the park, like the John Lennon Strawberry fields and Imagine Mosaic. Enjoy a rowboat on the lake, visit the scenic bridges and fountains or take a stroll through Central Park Zoo.
We always recommend mixing scheduled sightseeing with slower stops. Taking time to rest in a local café or stroll a street art trail allows you to soak up more of the city’s unique rhythm. Spacing out activities means you are not overwhelmed by the pace of the city.
Long Island & The Hamptons
Stretching east from New York City, Long Island offers a blend of grand estates, seaside villages and golden Atlantic beaches. On the North Shore, the magnificent Oheka Castle stands as one of America’s largest private homes, a Gatsby-era mansion surrounded by formal gardens and sweeping lawns.
Further east, the Hamptons showcase classic shingle-style architecture, historic windmills and elegant summer homes set behind white picket fences. Villages such as Southampton and East Hampton are known for boutique shopping, art galleries and refined dining, while long stretches of sandy coastline provide space to unwind.
At the island’s tip, Montauk feels more relaxed and windswept, with dramatic bluffs, a historic lighthouse and excellent seafood overlooking the ocean. Whether it’s beach time, coastal walks or soaking up sophisticated seaside charm, Long Island and the Hamptons deliver a stylish yet laid-back escape.
Road Trip Through the Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains
After the energy of New York City, the Hudson Valley offers a refreshing change of pace just a couple of hours north. Rolling vineyards, heritage towns and sweeping river views make it ideal for a relaxed self-drive journey.
Food lovers will recognise the renowned Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, where exceptional dining experiences showcase world-class culinary talent. Nearby, Springwood, the longtime home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, provides an engaging glimpse into American history. The impressive United States Military Academy at West Point sits high above the Hudson River, offering guided tours of its storied campus and spectacular views.
One of the region’s standout highlights is the Walkway Over the Hudson, the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge, delivering panoramic river vistas. Aviation enthusiasts can also visit the Old Rhine-beck Aerodrome, where vintage biplanes still take to the skies in seasonal flying displays.
Charming towns such as Beacon and Cold Spring invite visitors to stroll walkable main streets lined with galleries, boutiques and welcoming cafés, while farm-to-table restaurants celebrate the region’s rich agricultural roots. Art lovers can explore contemporary galleries and impressive outdoor sculpture parks scattered throughout the valley.
Beyond the river, the Catskill Mountains unfold with scenic drives, waterfalls, hiking trails and craft breweries. In autumn, the foliage transforms the valleys into a patchwork of colour. It is a region that rewards slowing down and soaking up its natural beauty and cultural depth.
Finger Lakes, Food Trails and Wine Country
Heading west towards the Finger Lakes opens up yet another layer of New York State. With its long, narrow lakes, waterfall trails, and a reputation for wine and craft beer, this area is a favourite for road trippers who enjoy flexible journeys.
Towns like Ithaca are popular for markets, breweries, and lakeside walks.
Watkins Glen is known for its dramatic waterfall hiking and scenic gorges.
Wine lovers can follow tasting routes with stunning lake views at nearly every stop.
Travellers who have experienced West Coast wine regions often find the Finger Lakes refreshingly relaxed, with smaller producers and less traffic. It is a wonderful match for themed itineraries focused on food and slow travel.
Adventure Upstate: Adirondack Mountains to the Thousand Islands
Travelling through the Adirondack Mountains transform the journey once again. This vast protected parkland is all about outdoor adventure – pristine lakes, forested peaks and scenic byways. Highlights include Lake Placid, home of the Winter Olympics, mirror-calm lakes perfect for paddling, and mountain summits offering sweeping views across endless wilderness. The region shines in the warmer months when hiking trails, kayaking routes and lakeside towns are in full swing.
Further west, the Thousand Islands region along the St. Lawrence River offers a completely different atmosphere. Riverside towns such as Clayton and Alexandria Bay invite leisurely exploration, with boat cruises weaving between islands dotted with grand summer homes. The storybook highlight is Boldt Castle, an early 20th-century castle built on Heart Island as a monument to love. Scenic cruises, waterfront dining and sunset views over the river make this region ideal for couples and small groups seeking both sightseeing and downtime.
Buffalo & Niagara Falls
Western New York delivers one of North America’s great natural spectacles at Niagara Falls. The sheer power of the falls – best experienced by boat cruise to the base or along panoramic walking paths – is unforgettable. Evenings bring colourful illuminations, while nearby parks offer quieter viewpoints and nature trails.
Just downstream, the revitalised waterfront city of Buffalo surprises visitors with impressive architecture, a growing arts scene and its famous Buffalo wings at the original Anchor Bar. Explore Frank Lloyd Wright designs, stroll Canalside, or cruise along Lake Erie for a broader perspective of the region. Together, Buffalo and Niagara Falls combine natural wonder with urban energy, creating a memorable finale to any Upstate New York adventure.
Making It Yours: Tailormade Stops Across the State
One of the best aspects of New York State in any custom USA itinerary is its natural connectivity. It easily links up with other major Northeast destinations. You can add visits to Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. steeped in history or even Montreal without dramatically increasing travel time.
Trips often stretch to include:
Amtrak train journeys with panoramic views through forests and hills
Photography-focused detours passing national parks or charming coastal towns
Secluded forest lodges for a break between lively cities
There is no single right way to experience the region. Many of our clients find this part of their holiday is where fine-tuning the pace of travel makes the biggest difference. Rather than packing every day, sometimes the highlights are quiet morning drives or lunch at a vineyard overlooking the water.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)
You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
