Next USA Adventures for Kiwi Travellers to Start Planning Now

Published on : February 9, 2026

Discover Your Next American Escape

Planning your next trip to the States from New Zealand works best when you start with a theme, not just a list of big-name cities. At Travel USA, we specialise in personalised USA itineraries for Kiwi travellers, designed around music, national parks, road trips, and seasonal experiences that feel distinctly American. Because we are New Zealand-owned, we understand what Kiwis want on a long-haul holiday, from relaxed pacing to meaningful stops instead of fast paced check list travel.

In this guide, we are sharing the styles of itineraries we are focusing on right now, so you can start dreaming and planning. Rather than generic city breaks, you will see music trails through the South, horse and bourbon country, legendary national parks, and easy road trip routes linked to convenient flights. Every idea can be tailored for couples, families, or groups of friends, built into our USA personalised itineraries that match your dates, interests, and budget.

Follow the Soundtracks of the South

One of the most in-demand itineraries we are developing is a Soundtracks of the South trail, starting in Memphis, then crossing to the Shoals, and finishing in Nashville. It suits Kiwis who love live music, history, and the freedom of the open road. This is not just about big concert venues, it is about the places where rock and roll, soul, blues, and country were born.

Memphis is the home of rock and roll, soul, and deep blues. Iconic highlights include:

  • Graceland, Elvis Presley’s famous home and museum
  • Beale Street at night with blues bars and live bands
  • Sun Studio, where artists like Elvis and Johnny Cash recorded
  • Stax Museum of American Soul Music
  • The Mississippi Riverfront for sunset views and river walks
  • National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel
  • Classic Memphis barbecue joints with live music
  • Local neighborhoods with murals and music history tours
  • Riverboat cruises on the Mississippi
  • Historic theaters and intimate music venues

From Memphis, you follow the music to the Shoals area in northern Alabama. This region is known for its legendary recording studios and laid-back Southern feel. Top experiences in and around Florence and Muscle Shoals include:

  • Muscle Shoals Sound Studio tours
  • FAME Studios, where many soul greats recorded
  • Small-town main streets with local diners and cafes
  • Tennessee River viewpoints and riverside walks
  • Local music bars with up-and-coming artists
  • Regional dishes like fried chicken, catfish, and pies
  • Heritage and music history museums
  • Helen Keller’s home and museum

The trail finishes in Nashville, long known as Music City and a launchpad for countless careers in country, Americana, and beyond. Our favourite Nashville highlights include:

  • Honky-tonks and live bands along Broadway
  • Grand Ole Opry for classic and contemporary country acts
  • Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
  • Ryman Auditorium, the “Mother Church of Country Music”
  • Neighborhoods like 12 South, The Gulch, and East Nashville
  • Strong food scene, from hot chicken to farm-to-table dining
  • Craft breweries and rooftop bars with skyline views
  • Johnny Cash Museum and other specialty music museums
  • Studio tours in historic recording districts
  • Parks and greenways for relaxed walks or bike rides, like Centennial park 132-acre urban oasis
  • Steamboat cruises up the river cruising past the city lights
  • Music city Walk of Fame

As a stand-alone music holiday or part of a bigger Deep South loop, this is one of the USA tour packages we expect many Kiwi travellers to fall in love with.

Ride Through Kentucky Horse and Bourbon Country

Kentucky calls itself the Horse and Bourbon Capital of the World, which makes it especially appealing to New Zealand’s strong horse community as well as curious first-timers. Rolling green farms, immaculate barns, and white-fenced paddocks set the scene for some of the most famous bloodlines in racing.

Horse lovers can:

  • Tour world-class breeding and training farms, including elite operations such as Godolphin at Gainsborough Farm
  • Watch morning workouts at racetracks or training centres
  • Visit horse museums to learn about racing legends
  • Explore racetracks tied to the Kentucky Derby and local racing culture

On the bourbon side, Kentucky is equally rich. The state is packed with distilleries, from historic names to smaller operations on the Bourbon Trail. Typical experiences include:

  • Guided tours through stillhouses and barrel warehouses
  • Tastings that explain flavour, aging, and mash bills
  • Food pairings that match bourbon with Southern dishes
  • Gift shops with bottles you might not easily find back home

Kentucky fits neatly into wider USA itineraries, pairing especially well with Nashville and Louisville, or threading into a bigger Southern road trip that might also feature Tennessee, Alabama, and beyond.

Explore America’s Greatest Natural Icons

For many Kiwis, the Grand Canyon is the one national park they think of first, and it deserves that reputation. The South Rim is the most visited area, with classic viewpoints, paved walks along the rim, and a choice of lodges nearby. The North Rim feels quieter and more remote, ideal for those who prefer fewer people and cooler temperatures in season. Closer to Las Vegas, the West Rim is known for the Skywalk, a glass platform that projects out over the canyon.

Popular Grand Canyon experiences include sunrise and sunset viewpoints, short walks along the rim, day hikes below the edge, helicopter and scenic flights, and rafting or kayaking on the Colorado River. Staying overnight inside or just outside the park lets you experience the canyon at its quietest times.

Further north, Utah’s Mighty Five national parks are a dream for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Zion has steep canyon walls and riverside walks, Arches is dotted with natural stone arches and rock formations, Canyonlands offers wide desert views and deep canyons, Bryce Canyon is known for its hoodoo rock spires, and Capitol Reef mixes cliffs, orchards, and scenic drives. Together, they can form an epic loop for active Kiwi travellers.

In California, Yosemite National Park combines granite giants like El Capitan and Half Dome, cascading waterfalls, and groves of giant sequoias. Classic viewpoints such as Glacier Point and Tunnel View give sweeping scenes of the valley. Visitors can enjoy cycling, easy valley walks, and more challenging hikes to higher viewpoints.

We focus on joining these parks into custom USA packages that balance driving distances, overnight stays inside or just outside the parks, and seasonal weather so you avoid unnecessary crowds or closed roads.

City Breaks, Rhythms of the South, and Seasonal Magic

While music trails and national parks are central, key cities also deserve several nights each. Nashville and Memphis reward a slower pace, with time to explore their museums, neighborhoods, live venues, and distinct food scenes. In both, you can fill your days with culture and your nights with music.

New York City is a core part of many itineraries, from first-time visits to detailed repeat stays. Classic highlights include skyline views from observation decks, Central Park strolls, Broadway shows, borough neighbourhoods, and landmark attractions. We support Kiwi travellers with in-depth guidance and planning resources so the city feels exciting, and not overwhelming.

Christmas in New York is a bucket list experience for many New Zealanders. The Rockefeller Centre tree and ice skating rink, holiday window displays, festive markets, and the chance of snow in Central Park make the city feel like a movie set. Timed correctly, it can anchor a wider winter USA itineraries.

Further south, the Rhythms of the South trail connects Nashville, Atlanta, and New Orleans through music, food, and culture. Each city has its own style, from Nashville’s country roots to Atlanta’s modern energy to the jazz and Creole flavours of New Orleans. This route can form another themed music road trip for Kiwi travellers.

Chicago consistently earns high praise as one of America’s top cities, yet it’s often overlooked by international travellers in favour of New York City. Its stunning lakefront along Lake Michigan, iconic architecture visible on river cruises, and vibrant attractions like Millennium Park and “The Bean” draw visitors in. Add the lively Navy Pier, a thriving dining scene, and energetic nightlife, and it’s clear that Chicago rewards longer stays rather than just one-night stopovers.

Iconic USA Road Trips from New Zealand

USA road trips from New Zealand continue to be one of the most popular ways for Kiwi travellers to experience the depth and diversity of America. With vast landscapes, distinctive regional culture, and well-signposted highways, the United States is made for self-drive exploration.

Get Your Vibe on I-65 offers a true North-to-South cross-section of the country. Linking Chicago to New Orleans, this interstate journey takes you through Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama, delivering a rich mix of music, food, and Southern character. Framed as Chicago to New Orleans, it becomes a compelling Deep South experience that pairs beautifully with time in two iconic cities.

Then there’s legendary Route 66, still one of the most requested USA road trips from New Zealand. Stretching from Chicago to Santa Monica, it blends nostalgia, small-town Americana, desert landscapes, and classic diners into an unforgettable cross-country adventure. If you’re looking for a ready-made way to experience this iconic drive, our dedicated Route 66 self-drive itinerary brings together the must-see highlights with the flexibility Kiwi travellers value.

On the East Coast, New England offers a completely different flavour of the USA. From Boston’s history and harbour views to Vermont’s maple syrup and craft breweries, Rhode Island’s Newport mansions, Maine’s rugged coastline and Acadia National Park, and the classic covered bridges scattered throughout the region, this six-state journey delivers timeless charm – particularly during autumn’s vibrant foliage season.

Seamless Flights from NZ to the USA

What ties these journeys together is connectivity. Flights from NZ to the USA have never been more accessible for Kiwi travellers. Through our preferred Star Alliance partners, Air New Zealand and United Airlines, you can connect to more than 150 destinations right across the United States.

With key gateways including Honolulu, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, and New York – and the most flights to the USA of any carrier group – building flexible, multi-city USA itineraries is straightforward. Start in Chicago for Route 66 or I-65, fly into New York for New England, or arrive on the West Coast and finish in the South without backtracking.

The strength of the flight network means your USA holiday doesn’t need to be limited to one region. It can be as ambitious, diverse, and immersive as you want it to be – and that’s exactly how we like to design it.

Turn Inspiration Into Your Own Tailor-Made USA Holiday

When planning your next American holiday, start with what excites you most: live music, horse farms or bourbon and wine trails, grand national parks, hiking and the great outdoors, authentic ranch stays, epic road trips, big-name cities, or seasonal experiences like Christmas in New York or New England’s autumn colours. Family holidays can range from Disneyland adventures in California or Orlando to unforgettable motorhome trips through the countryside. From these interests, we can design a route that feels cohesive rather than disjointed.

At Travel USA, we create tailor-made USA experiences for Kiwi travellers, adjusting dates, pacing, stops, and budget, while taking care of practicalities like flights, accommodation, car hire, and park logistics. Our goal is to turn your ideas into a trip that feels personal – not just a surface-level visit, but a holiday you’ll be talking about for years.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We’ve been back a week and had time to reflect on what was a fantastic trip to Colorado and Chicago. Thanks for all your assistance with our trip – it was the best US trip we have had so far

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

His knowledge, travel tips, and thoughtful check-ins made the whole trip completely seamless and his attention to detail and genuine care took all the stress out of travelling. Highly recommend Travel USA for anyone wanting a hassle-free, expertly planned adventure.

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)

You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

We said it is actually uncanny how with just phone communications and emails with strangers your selections were just so us. We will definitely recommend Travel USA and will be in touch when we travel to the states again, next time. Cannot rate you highly enough with your expertise and knowledge. With appreciation and heartfelt thanks.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
