Travelling to the USA from NZ During the Summer Break

Travelling to the USA from NZ in the Autumn and the Holiday Season
At Travel USA, New Zealand’s only dedicated USA travel specialist, founded by Andrew Gay with 35+ years’ experience, we design USA holidays exclusively for Kiwis. A quick heads up on timing: the seasons in the States are opposite to ours. US autumn is September to November, while our school summer holidays (mid-December to late January) line up with US winter and the festive season.
That means two great windows with very different vibes:
● Sep–Nov: classic autumn colours, harvest festivals and comfortable temps right across much of the country.
● Mid Dec–Jan: winter wonderland in the north and at elevation, with milder options in the southern states and Hawaii, plus the full sparkle of Christmas and New Year.
Both are brilliant for different reasons. With the right planning, around daylight hours, weather, and popular event dates, we’ll shape a holiday that fits your style, energy levels and budget.
Planning a USA Adventure That Fits Your Style
Everyone travels differently. Some want a cosy base and easy day trips; others like a mix of city buzz, nature and a touch of theme park magic. The USA can do it all; you just need a plan that matches the season.
● Sep–Nov (US autumn): Ideal for road trips, wine regions, coastal drives and many national parks with lighter crowds.
● Mid Dec–Jan (US winter and festive season): Think city breaks with twinkling lights, snow experiences, ski weeks, mild weather escapes in the south, and Hawaii for beach and adventure days. Self driving is best kept to low elevation and coastal routes at this time; in snow-prone regions we often recommend city stays, rail, flights and small group tours instead.
If you love live music and food, cooler evenings add to the atmosphere in places like New Orleans, Austin and Nashville. If it’s festive sparkle you’re after, book early for parades, light trails, special concerts and ice skating sessions. For families travelling after Christmas in January, you’ll often find lighter crowds and better availability, especially around theme parks.
Where to Go: Top Picks for Kiwi Travellers
Holiday Season and January Favourites (US winter)
● New York City: December in NYC is iconic: Rockefeller Centre tree, Bryant Park Winter Village, the Rockettes, dazzling windows and impromptu performances. It’s magical and chilly (often snowy) but also adds to the atmosphere of NYC at this time of year, so plan for winter clothing and book key experiences ahead. Driving isn’t recommended as public transport is plentiful in New York with the subway becoming an underground world this time of year. Walking tours are the go, with day trips by rail to Washington D.C. or Boston if you’d like a change of scene and engross yourself in US history.
● Southern California: Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Diego deliver mild days and festive overlays at Disneyland Resort and Universal Studios. January is excellent for families post Christmas: cooler temps, lighter queues and great value. Add coastal sunsets, the San Diego Zoo’s after dark experiences, and easy day trips to beaches & watch the seals that are frequent sites on the coastline and desert parks like Joshua Tree in Greater Palm Springs.
● Florida: Orlando’s theme parks shine with holiday magic and generally mild weather; Miami mixes art, food and beaches; Florida Keys feel laid back and warm. It’s also a handy jumping off point for Bahamas or Caribbean cruises.
● Desert Southwest (low elevation): Phoenix/Scottsdale, the red rocks of Sedona and Greater Palm Springs are sunny, with cool evenings and brilliant hiking. The Grand Canyon’s South Rim is open year round but expect cold temps and possible snow; Zion’s lower valley trails can be lovely in winter sunshine. Bryce Canyon and high elevation parks can be very snowy and stunning, but best tackled with care with local advice.
● The South: New Orleans, Austin, San Antonio, Nashville, and Charleston bring music, history and comfort food warmth. Mostly mild, but cold snaps can happen; pack layers and enjoy the scrollable neighbourhoods, light shows and seasonal festivals.
● Hawaii: Close to NZ and perfect in January. Go beyond Waikiki to the other islands; volcano adventures on Hawai‘i Island, sea cliffs and helicopter flights on Kaua‘i, Haleakalā sunrise on Maui, surf action on O‘ahu’s North Shore and winter whale watching across the islands. Add a round island cruising or mix two islands for variety.
● Ski and snow holidays: If you’re chasing powder, we tailor stays in Colorado (Vail, Breckenridge, Aspen), Utah (Park City, Deer Valley), California/Nevada (Lake Tahoe) and Wyoming (Jackson Hole). Non-skiers can still enjoy tubing, sleigh rides and cosy alpine villages.
Autumn (Sep–Nov) Highlights
● New England and the Hudson Valley: Classic leafpeeping drives, covered bridges, farm-to-table stops and charming inns. Stunning autumn scenery with brightly coloured valleys.
● California harvest: Napa and Sonoma crush season, Pacific Coast Highway road trips and milder national park days.
● Southwest and canyon country: Comfortable temps for hiking and scenic drives, with fewer crowds than summer.
Building in National Parks and Nature Stops
Nature is memorable in any season, so just plan according to the conditions.
● Winter (Dec–Feb): Lower elevation parks and deserts are ideal; higher elevations (Yosemite, Bryce, Yellowstone) can have significant snow, road closures and chain requirements. Some areas switch to snowcoaches or guided tours; spectacular, but not self-drive territory, advice from local authorities is always recommended in winter season. We’ll advise on safe routes, backup plans and the best lodges, but areas that are cold & snow always have fireplaces & firepits to keep everyone cosy in the winter season.
● Autumn (Sep–Nov): Quieter trails, clear air and rich colours across many parks. It’s a great time for self-drive itineraries and leisurely picnics.
With shorter daylight in winter, you’ll catch golden hour without late nights. We pace itineraries to avoid fatigue and add buffers for weather days, so your trip stays smooth.
Getting There and Settling In
It’s easy to fly from New Zealand via gateways like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston or Dallas/Fort Worth, with Hawaii a popular stopover. Around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year, airports and roads are busy, so allow extra time and keep your first day light to beat jet lag.
Moving around:
● City and East Coast hops: Rail and short domestic flights are efficient, especially in winter.
● Driving: Great for California, southern and coastal routes in fine weather. We don’t generally recommend driving in NYC, and we recommend you steer clear of high elevation passes in winter. In NY State, however, we will always advise you of safe alternatives when doing a road trip.
● Small group tours: A superb way to see national parks and snow destinations without driving yourself, noting that some operators don’t operate in winter seasons.
Why Tailormade Holidays Work So Well Now
Shorter days, special events and winter weather reward a clear, flexible plan. That’s where we come in. We build to your pace:
● Families in January: Stay close to Disney for early entries and night shows, or split time between LA/Orlando and a Hawaii wind down.
● City lovers: Rooftop bars with heaters, galleries by day, festive nights and easy day trips by rail.
● Nature seekers: Desert sunshine, scenic small towns and hand-picked lodges, with road choices that suit the conditions.
● Snow fans: Ski in/ski out convenience, lessons for the kids and rest days in spa towns.
Our itineraries can include pre-reserved park passes, timed entry attractions, event tickets, chain-free routing, weather-aware pacing and 24/7 local support.
Make the Most of Your End-of-Year Escape
Whether you want New York’s winter sparkle, mild weather theme park fun, desert sunshine, or a Hawaii island-hopping adventure, we’ll stitch it together so every day feels just right. If you’re travelling after Christmas, January can be a sweet spot for families: better availability, gentler crowds and excellent value in many places.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)
You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
