Planning Motorhome Adventures in the USA for Kiwi Families
Taking the family on a big overseas trip is a pretty special thing. For a lot of Kiwi travellers, there’s something about hitting the road that just works. Motorhomes in the USA are ideal if you want a trip that moves at your pace, with stops shaped around your interests, not someone else’s timetable.
It’s a big country, and that’s what makes it fun. You can roll through major cities one day and be parked beside a quiet national park the next. Every family is different, which is why building a plan that suits your crew is key. Whether you want classic sights or quirky stops, a good motorhome trip gives you the right mix of structure and freedom.
If you’re wondering where to start and how to make it enjoyable for everyone, especially with kids in the back seats, we’ve pulled together the kind of advice we give to Kiwis heading Stateside with the motorhome keys ready.
Finding Your Family’s Road Trip Style
Start with how your family likes to travel. Some kids are up at sunrise and straight out the door, while others do better with slower mornings and downtime. That pace matters when thinking through drive distances and how many nights to stay in each spot.
Younger kids usually need more out-of-van time and space to play. Older ones can handle longer stretches on the road if the destination feels exciting. Try to include places that have something for everyone, like a mix of natural wonders, interactive stops, and a splash of theme park fun.
To avoid burnout before the halfway mark, it pays to spread out your big days. Not every day needs to be a highlight. Some of the best memories come from a random picnic spot, an unplanned swim, or extra downtime at a campsite. Every motorhome journey finds its own rhythm, and working out yours helps keep everyone happy.
Where to Begin: Planning the Route
One of the best parts about motorhomes in the USA is mapping out your start points and key attractions. Families love classic circuits, and there are a few winners that show up again and again in Kiwi trip plans.
California always stands out. From San Diego’s beaches up to the redwoods, you can loop Los Angeles, the Pacific coast, San Francisco, and then cut across to Yosemite National Park. This covers beaches, cities, and world-class national parks in one trip.
Another favourite is a Southwest loop, taking in the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Monument Valley. If your family is keen on science, wildlife, or space, stops like the Arizona Science Centre or Salt Lake City’s Natural History Museum make good breaks between major parks.
The southern states are becoming more popular, especially Tennessee and Louisiana. Nashville’s music spots and New Orleans’ energy both work well for relaxed family days and cultural stops.
Season shapes what works best, too. Most Kiwis are flying over between April and October, which matches up with spring, summer, or early autumn in the US. It’s the best time for open roads, fully accessible parks, and easy driving.
Custom motorhome holidays in the USA organised by Travel USA can include flexible start and end points, popular family campgrounds, and motorhome hire that suits New Zealand licence requirements.
Creating Kid-Friendly Itineraries
The magic of a family motorhome trip is in the daily routine. The best itineraries limit long drive days, mix in plenty of run-around time, and stay flexible just in case someone needs a random ice cream stop or a nap.
Cities loaded with family attractions make great anchor points, in which case a suv vehicle maybe more approximate still a larger vehicle but not having worry about parking in the city. San Diego’s easygoing beaches and top zoo, Nashville’s mix of parks and music-themed fun, and New Orleans’ riverfront aquarium all stand out as top choices for travelling with kids.
It’s worth building in at least one or two wow-factor days, especially if your route passes by a big attraction. Walt Disney World Resort in Florida is the classic, and takes planning, but it can anchor the entire holiday. Four parks, waterparks, shopping, and themed resorts make for a trip like no other.
When it comes to overnight stays, family-friendly RV parks and campgrounds make life easy, with facilities like laundries, playgrounds, pools, and BBQ areas. Many also offer beautiful settings close to national parks, lakes, or beaches, giving you more time outdoors and less time unpacking.
Travel USA’s family-focused packages for motorhome adventures in the USA can include pre-booked campgrounds, attraction passes, and special stops designed for younger travellers or multigenerational groups.
Making the Drive Easy (and Fun)
The motorhome becomes home base for any good road trip, so size, layout, and comfort all count. Most families looking for motorhome tours in the USA choose a mid-sized RV (which is what the Americans call them) with enough room for everyone to sleep comfortably and space for luggage, food, and gear.
It’s smart to keep a “road bag” handy inside the motorhome—with snacks, water bottles,
chargers, wipes, and card games or playlists for the long stretches. This setup keeps mornings smooth and means less digging around for essentials.
While GPS and navigation apps are gold, paper maps can add a sense of adventure. Kids can track where you’ve been and help pick detours as you go. Regional food stops, quirky diners, or even famous local snacks give your trip flavour and keep spirits up.
To fill in drive time, try audiobooks or hunt for offbeat roadside attractions. Everything from the world’s largest pistachio in New Mexico to a classic drive-in movie outside Los Angeles adds extra fun to the open road.
Why Tailormade USA Holidays Work Better
Organising a drive across a country as big as the USA is never simple. With flights, distance, weather, and all the “but can we go there?” requests, a generic plan rarely cuts it.
That’s where custom plans designed for Kiwi families come in handy. Each itinerary can be built for the right pace, with pre-booked campgrounds, flexible activity options, and time built in for breaks or spontaneous finds. Fewer relocation drives, smarter routing, and handpicked stops allow for just the right mix of adventure and downtime.
Travel USA knows how to connect Kiwi flight timings, handle one-way RV rentals, and match drive days to manageable routes for families.
Anyone who’s planned their own trip before knows the little details make all the difference. When a holiday starts with maps that match your group’s energy, options for side attractions, and backup plans, the trip never feels rushed or crowded. You’re left with space to enjoy it all as it comes.
Turning the Open Road into Family Memories
Family holidays are built around shared memories, and motorhome adventures in the USA are packed with these special moments. Sharing a sunset at the Grand Canyon, catching live music in a small-town square, or pulling over on a whim for something you spot up ahead—these are what stick with you after the trip.
It’s about having a journey that truly fits your crew, with days that adapt and leave space for the unexpected. The right rhythm makes it easy for everyone to settle in, relax, and return home with more than just photos. With a plan shaped for your family and a bit of flexibility, hitting the open road in the States can be the kind of adventure you remember for your lifetime.

We used Travel USA to plan a 3-week trip around the States – we had the trip of a lifetime and saw so much more than we thought we would with Andrew’s great recommendations. They are very knowledgeable across all aspects of travel (city passes, best travel routes) and were immediately on hand whenever we had any questions or concerns at any point, even when we were over there. We also loved that Andrew provided such a detailed itinerary for us, including extra information or handy tips. Whether it’s planning what to see while you’re in the States or the best way to make the most of your time in a specific city, we highly recommend Travel USA.

Andrew and Sean’s first-hand knowledge is what really sets them apart — they know the small details, hidden gems, and all the little nooks and crannies you’d never find in a world of generic, AI-generated itineraries. They’re always quick to reply, and between them seem to know everything — from the best Star Wars experiences at Disney (I had no idea you could build your own lightsaber!), to sipping champagne on the floor of the Grand Canyon or securing the best seats at the Grand Ole Opry. Proper bucket-list stuff – 100% recommend Travel USA.

We could not have done it ourselves and Travel USA’s instructions were ON-POINT! We liked the mix of transport that was organised for us ie. bus, ferry and rail which made for an interesting experience. Accommodation was brilliant throughout and the Faraway at Martha’s Vineyard was the most interesting hotel we have ever stayed at – we even had a record player in our room with 2 LP’s – one of them a Bob Dylan album!

I have been telling everyone and anyone who says they are interested in travelling to America to get in touch with you as we really had the most amazing time. We really can’t thank you enough for your exceptional service during our recent trip to the states. Your attention to detail, organisation, and approachability truly made all the difference in ensuring we had a smooth and enjoyable experience. (The highlight was definitely the pick-up truck you organised – you hit the nail on the head with that one!)
You really paid attention to what we wanted to get out of our trip, and everything was planned in such detail, and ran smoothly. Your expert recommendations were spot on, and we felt so well taken care of the entire time. Thanks to you, we had an unforgettable time, and we’re already talking about planning our next adventure with you to the Yellowstone country! I hope we can work together again soon in the not so distant future 🙂 Thank you again!

We were very pleased with the itinerary Travel USA arranged for us, there was a good mix of accommodation and towns. The travel distance each day was just right giving us plenty of time to do other things each day. Florence was a lovely little town and because we were there on a Friday night, we had the added bonus of enjoying their once a month street markets and open air live music, it was a lovely night. We also appreciated the contact you made while we away advising us of things to pre book etc. There is a lot to think about especially as we were a group of 8 and sometimes 10. We would definitely recommend your services to other people, and by using your expertise it took the stress away from us as a group trying to decide what to do.

Now that we are back from our holiday to the States, I just want to say thank you for your part in organising an amazing itinerary for us. We had such an awesome time. We loved experiencing New York and everything it has to offer; we were pleased to be staying 8 nights there. The Go City Pass you recommended made visiting each attraction easy and it encouraged us to get out and explore. The rest of our itinerary went without any problems, the accommodation you selected was very well located, making it easy for us to get around without needing transport. We had a lot of fun. Back to the routine of work now – thanks again for everything.

Andrew assisted me with a group booking of 5 couples travelling to the USA for 5 weeks. They wanted to do a “road trip” through the Southern States and spend time in New York. Andrew’s knowledge of the USA is an incredible asset to people planning to travel here, he put together an awesome route, recommended great hotels in the best locations and had so much information on city passes, things to do and places of interest. As a travel agent I found that Travel USA had the best contacts and information from everything from rental cars, hotels, shows, tours etc and they outlined all of this in very detailed itineraries ready to give straight to my clients. He provided a professional detailed itinerary for the group that went 100% perfectly. Andrew made my job easy, and my clients were extremely happy with their holiday plans. I will definitely be using Andrew and his company in the future and would recommend anyone when planning to go to the USA to use their services.
